Charles L. Karst, helped at church

Charles L. Karst spent much of his life decorating St. Bernard's Church in Taylors Creek.

Now his family and friends are planning to erect an outdoor nativity scene on the church grounds in his honor.

Mr. Karst died Friday at age 64.

He served as pastoral assistant at the Catholic church for many years, and especially enjoyed decorating it for the Christmas holiday, family said.

'Christmas was one of his favorite times of the year and of course he died on Christmas Day,' said Audrey Heglin, his sister.

'He would just get very elated about Christmas. He always had parties for the ones he worked with and ones for his neighbors,' she said.

A seminary student in the 1960s, Mr. Karst felt he did not have a calling to become a priest but dedicated his time to the church regardless.

As a paid pastoral assistant, he cared for the altar and church flowers, organized the church schedules, taught Bible classes and visited sick members of the congregation.

'He just kind of liked this work, and it's not something that you'll get a high salary in,' said Father Stanley Doerger, priest at St. Bernard's.

Mr. Karst died of heart disease and he had been diagnosed with lung cancer in July.

A group of friends from the church, calling themselves 'Charlie's Angels,' cared for him by bringing meals and cleaning his house, Mrs. Heglin said.

He leaves behind his sister and a brother, Robert A. Karst. He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Margaret Karst.

Lydwine Van Kersbergen, Grail founder

Lydwine Van Kersbergen, 93, who helped begin the Grail Movement in America in 1940 and helped establish Grailville in Loveland in 1944, died Christmas Eve in the Netherlands.

Ms. Van Kersbergen made Loveland her headquarters from 1944 to the late 1960s, when she returned to her native Netherlands.

'She was an extraordinary woman,' said Audrey Sorrento of Grailville. 'It was her conviction that women's energy and talent needed to be used in the church and society for social transformation toward justice, peace and social welfare.'

Ms. Van Kersbergen was the driving force behind the founding and development of the Grail Movement in England and Australia before she and Joan Overboss, also a native of the Netherlands, launched a similar U.S. effort.

The Grail Movement takes its name from the search for the Holy Grail of The Last Supper and the symbolic quest for good that the search represents. While the Grail Movement is centered around women, it is not limited to women.

Ms. Van Kersbergen and Ms. Overboss made Chicago the headquarters of the U.S. Grail Movement in 1940, but moved the headquarters to Loveland in 1944 after touring the Cincinnati area at the invitation of local church leaders.

For many years, Grailville in Loveland served as national headquarters of the Grail Movement. While the Grail Movement is now decentralized and Loveland is no longer the national headquarters, the 300-acre property remains the largest U.S. Grail center.

'Her life was driven by her conviction of the importance of women's contributions in church and society,' said Ms. Sorrento. 'She was an inspiration to many.'

Ms. Sorrento also said Ms. Van Kersbergen's ideals are kept alive at Grailville through an education and conference center used for a variety of lectures and retreats that emphasize personal and social growth.

Grailville also has a new women's resource center to help women get better jobs.

Ms. Van Kersbergen will be buried Thursday at the Tiltenberg in the Netherlands following a Eucharistic celebration. She leaves no survivors, according to friends.
