James O'Shea, business man, family man

A strong commitment to family and community marked the life of James O'Shea.

Mr. O'Shea, 67, of Monfort Heights, died Thursday.

For years he operated his own commercial construction company in College Hill.

His family came first, but he also was dedicated to helping others in the Colerain Township and Groesbeck areas, said his wife, Wilma Wiechers O'Shea.

He sponsored and coached Little League baseball for years.

Mr. O'Shea was a graduate of Colerain High School, where he was a captain of the football and baseball teams. He went on to play baseball at Wilmington College and played football while stationed in the U.S. Army in Germany.

Before retiring in 1994, he was an associate with West Shell Realtors for several years.

He also leaves daughters, Shawn Kraus and Mrs. Steve (Kelly) Van Dyke; a son, James William O'Shea and three grandchildren.

Services: At the convenience of the family. Memorials: Shriner's Burns Hospital or the city of the donor's choice. Arrangements: Charles A. Miller Sons Funeral Home.

Edward Donovan, GOP leader

Edward P. Donovan, a veteran Republican leader who was active in Irish-American organizations, died Sunday at his home in Green Township. He was 86.

Donovan began his political career in the 1960s as field representative for former congressman Donald Clancy and worked for the party until the past few years.

'He was a person you could count on to get the job done,' said former county Republican chairman Gene Ruehlmann.

Donovan, a court bailiff for many years, was a longtime member of the Republican National Committee, a ward chairman in Green Township and a past president of the Green Township and Hamilton County Republican Clubs.

The World War II Army veteran also was a trustee and past president of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a salesman for the Schoenling Brewing Co. and owned his own restaurant supply firm.

He leaves his wife, Melva Noonan Donovan; sons, Tom Donovan, of Cleves, and Sean Donovan, of Green Township; daughters, Maureen Pippin, of Hyde Park and Patricia Homan, of Naples, Fla.; stepdaughters, Maureen Niehaus, of Green Township and Sharon Rotroff, of Fairfield; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wife Elizabeth Cleary Donovan.

Arrangements were through Radel Funeral Home, Delhi Township.

Lucile Miller Durrell, conservationist

Lucile Miller Durrell, a nature conservation activist, geologist and member of the Ohio Science Hall of Fame, died Dec. 20 at East Galbraith Health Care Center.

Mrs. Durrell and her late husband, Professor Richard H. Durrell, visited all seven continents, compiling an extensive color-slide library illustrating nature's diversity. They founded the 12,000-acre section of Edge of Appalachia Richard and Lucile Durrell Preserve in Adams County, and the Richard and Lucile Durrell Geology Museum at the University of Cincinnati.

In recent years, Mrs. Durrell became interested in protecting the impact site of a giant meteorite that struck Adams County some 320 million years ago.

She was a member of the Women's Committee of the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History; the Ohio Chapter of the Nature Conservancy; the Federated Garden Clubs of Cincinnati; the Greater Cincinnati Tree Council; the Cincinnati River Front Commission; and she was a leader in the acquisition of the Northside  Woods Preserve.

She was active in the Mayor's Urban Greenery Committee; the Civic Garden Center of Cincinnati; the Cincinnati's Women's Club; the Cincinnati Nature Center; and the Hillside Gardeners.

She was a former librarian and laboratory assistant with the UC Geology Department.

Virginia Richard, owned Dilly Deli

L. Virginia Richard greeted customers of the Dilly Deli with a smile and a tasty sandwich, endearing her to many diners in Mariemont and others who had traveled distances to eat at the well-known establishment.

The Dilly Deli Wines and Gourmet Shop, now operated by her daughter Robbie Warinner, became a popular eatery and was expanded and eventually moved to its present location in the Mariemont Strand. Ms. Richard retired from the deli in 1989.

Ms. Richard, 69, of Mariemont, died Dec. 17 at home.

She and her husband, Robert, opened the Dilly Deli in 1985 and developed it into a strong family business. Her daughter, Robbie, and son-in-law, Charles Warinner, worked there for several years, then bought the eatery in 1989 and expanded it.

Ms. Richard, known by friends as 'Jinny,' and her husband also started another business - Rich's Electric.

She is survived by another daughter, Layne Hammock, and three grandchildren.

Services incomplete. Memorials to Hospice of Cincinnati or the Scottish Rite Masonic Children's Learning Center. T.P. White and Sons Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
