HENRY F. 'HANK' BOLTE, 83, of Lawrenceburg, Ind., died Thursday. He was a supervisor with Schenley Distillery and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. Philip A. Durcan, family man, good neighbor

When something needed to be done for his family, or in his neighborhood, Philip A. Durcan went ahead and did it.

'He was always helping others. He just couldn't say no to anybody,' said his wife, Lucile Durcan.

Mr. Durcan, 82, of Ludlow, died Saturday morning in St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

'He watched the neighbors' houses when they were gone, and when he saw that somebody's grass needed to be cut, or their snow shoveled, he just did it on his own,' said Mrs. Durcan.

Mr. Durcan worked for a number of years with the Trailmobile Co., and when it closed he became an assembler with Ford Motor Co. He was retired from that job.

To help with his daughters' education and other expenses, Mr. Durcan worked part time for many years at the Standard Service Station in Covington, his wife said.

Mr. Durcan was an Army veteran of World War II. He was in the military police in New Jersey, his wife said.

He was also a member of St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright, the St. Agnes Holy Name Society and United Auto Workers Union Local No. 863, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Lucile Durcan; daughters, Debbie Highhouse of Villa Hills, Phyllis Deitz of Fort Mitchell and Donna Crowley of Decatur, Ill.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Agnes Church. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ronald B.  Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial: St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorial: American Cancer Society, 7730 U.S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Lee Benedict Ficks, furniture maker

For years, Lee Benedict Ficks Sr. was associated with a Cincinnati company founded by his grandfather more than 100 years ago.

Mr. Ficks, 61, of Hyde Park, died Saturday.

He was the former president and CEO of the Ficks Reed Co., manufacturers of rattan furniture.

The firm was founded in New York in 1885 and soon moved to Cincinnati.

'Lee was loved by so many people, from all walks of life. He just had a special way,' said his son, Steven Strawn Ridenhour of Alexandria, Va.

Mr. Ficks graduated from the University of Cincinnati and attended Miami University.

He joined Ficks Reed after college. He enjoyed Episcopal Church choir functions and liturgical activities, boating and traveling with his wife, Joy Strawn Ficks.

He also leaves sons Lee Benedict Ficks Jr., of Bethesda, Md.; Charles Franklin Ridenhour III, of Kernersville, N.C.; daughters, Suzanne Ridgely Ficks of Newton, Mass. and Amy Ridenhour Goodall of Marietta, Ga.; a half-brother, Robert Ficks of Pinehurst, N.C., and two grandchildren.

Arrangements were by the Schaefer & Busby Funeral Home, downtown.

George D. Moon, UC prof, engineer

Anderson Township's George D. Moon, a nationally respected chemical engineer and adjunct professor emeritus of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cincinnati, died Saturday. He was 71.

Mr. Moon taught at UC for 40 years, was a consultant with Raphael Katzen Associates International Inc. in Norwood, and made his mark in the area of distillation equipment design. He holds five patents for distillation equipment and processes.

He also worked in synthetic gas manufacturing, alcohol production, separation processes, cryogenics and application of computers in chemical process analysis and simulation. During his career, he published numerous papers and served as project manager for major studies for the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Alcohol Fuels Commission.

Mr. Moon was a member of Yeatman-Mount Washington Lodge No. 162 F&AM, Scottish Rite and Mount Washington Presbyterian Church. He also was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and a past chairman of the Ohio Valley section of the group.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy G. Moon; sons, Don Moon of Fairfield and Joe Moon of Anderson Township; daughters, Peggy Bimschleger of Montgomery and Ruth Mayhood of Worthington; brothers, James Moon of Kettering and John Moon of Henderson, Ky.; and seven granddaughters.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Washington Presbyterian Church.

Edward A. Gschwind Jr., jeweler

Edward Adolf Gschwind Jr. of Hobe Sound, Fla., a Covington, Ky., native who operated a wholesale jewelry company in Cincinnati for many years, died Sunday. He was 91.

Before retiring, Mr. Gschwind was senior partner and owner of Harry Greenwold, Wallenstein-Mayer Wholesale Jewelry Company where he started working at the age of 14.

He moved to Florida from Fort Mitchell, Ky., in 1991. He lived in Lake Worth, Fla., before moving to Hobe Sound less than two years ago.

He was a charter member of the Madison Avenue Christian Church in Covington, where he was Sunday school superintendent and served as a deacon and elder. He was a member of the Lake Side United Methodist Church in Lake Worth for years and the First United Methodist Church of Hobe Sound.

He leaves his wife of 63 years, Viola Mary Elizabeth Hollenbeck Gschwind; a son, Gary Edward Gschwind of Hobe Sound and two grandsons.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday at the Young & Prill Funeral Home in Stuart, Fla. Visitation: 1 p.m. Friday until the time of services at the funeral home.
