Sister Ruth Jonas, won 1st faculty award at Mount
Sister Ruth Jonas, a missionary and professor at the College of Mount St. Joseph, died Thursday at Margaret Hall nursing home in Delhi Township. Sister Ruth was 87.
Sister Ruth, formerly Sister Ruth Adelaide, was a Sister of Charity for nearly 70 years.
She also was an accomplished artist and writer.
Sister Ruth was a 1934 graduate of the College of Mount St. Joseph, and first taught secondary school in Lima, Springfield and Cincinnati.
She later became a professor at the College of Mount St. Joseph from 1937-1969, where she taught French and served as head of the Humanities Department.
Sister Ruth also was the first recipient of the Faculty Appreciation Award presented by the Mount in 1988. The award is presented to a current or former faculty member who has demonstrated teaching excellence and made a difference in the lives of the students.
In nominating Sister Ruth, a Mount alumna said, 'A woman of many gifts, Sister Ruth helped us realize how to be poor in spirit and to love. Those are the greatest gifts any teacher can give.'
She also performed missionary work in Upper Volta, West Africa, Peru and Ecuador.
Sister Ruth later returned to the Mount from 1971-72, teaching part-time, chairing the Modern Foreign Language Department, and preparing a two-volume report on a three-year experiment in cross-cultural language understanding.
In 1995, she retired to the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse in Delhi Township.
She is survived by a brother, Carl Jonas of Belmont, Calif., and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, in the Heritage Room at the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse, 5900 Delhi Road. Mass: at 7 p.m. in the Motherhouse chapel.

Rev. Robert J. Putnick, retired priest
Rev. Robert J. Putnick, 77, died Thursday at Franciscan Hospital, Western Hills Campus. Father Putnick, who retired from active ministry in 1991, studied at St. Gregory and Mount St. Mary's seminaries and the Athenaeum of Ohio. He was ordained to the priesthood on Feb. 24, 1945.
Father Putnick served as pastor at St. Vincent Ferrer Parish, Kenwood, from 1973 to 1985, and then at Holy Family Parish, Price Hill, until his retirement.
He also was an associate pastor at several Cincinnati parishes, including St. Clare, College Hill; St. Teresa of Avila, Price Hill; Blessed Sacrament, Sedamsville; and St. Ignatius, Monfort Heights. Father Putnick also was a teacher at Elder High School from 1945 to 1965.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Church, Price Hill. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Price Hill.

Sister Mary Colette, opened AA center
Sister Mary Colette Leaders opened the first Alcoholics Anonymous center - in Columbus - for women in the U.S.
Sister Mary Colette died Saturday at age 91 at the Sisters of the Good Shepherd Convent in Fort Thomas, Ky.
She had been the superior at the order's convent and schools in Columbus and Cleveland.
Survivors include a sister and several nephews and nieces.
