William Albaugh, a Lemon Piper
William E. Albaugh, 53, of Batesville, Ind. - drummer for the nationally known 1960s rock band the Lemon Pipers - died Wednesday.
Mr. Albaugh recently had been a representative for Tilton Equipment. He also was owner of Cricket Ridge Chain Saw service and operated a produce/dairy business.
The Lemon Pipers started out as Ivan and the Sabres, playing such local venues as Americana Amusement Park. After changing their name, they played at the old Ludlow Garage, Cincinnati's premier spot for live rock 'n' roll in the 1960s and '70s. They grabbed national recognition with the hit 'Green Tambourine.' The band returned to play 'oldies' shows as late as the early '90s.
Cincinnati City Council Member Jim Tarbell, who managed the Ludlow Garage, called Albaugh a wonderful guy.
'He was very bright,' Tarbell said. 'He was a combination of academician and country gentleman. He was an excellent drummer.'
Tarbell labeled the Lemon Pipers the best band Cincinnati produced from that era.
'They were very much different from what they became known for,' Tarbell said. 'That was kind of a pop version. They were much more of a progressive rock 'n' roll band. They were an excellent group of musicians, and Bill was part of that original group.'
He is survived by his partner, Jennifer Gray, and her son, Nathaniel. He also leaves two sons, Zachary Albaugh of Cincinnati and William K. Albaugh of Oxford, and his sister, Tonda Hicks of Florida.
No services are planned. Weigel Funeral Home, Batesville, is handling arrangements.
