William A. "Bud' Rudd, founded insurance firm; art, music lover
William A. 'Bud' Rudd Sr., 93, a retired insurance executive, fine arts philanthropist and life-long resident of Cincinnati, died Wednesday.
Mr. Rudd graduated from St. Xavier High School and, in 1927, from Xavier University. He then joined a contracting firm founded by his father, William R. Rudd, believed to be the first contractor to lay a cement sidewalk in Cincinnati.
Within a few years, Mr. Rudd founded an insurance company, William A. Rudd, Inc. He pioneered the establishment of association group life and disability income insurance in Ohio. He retired from the business in 1974.
One of Mr. Rudd's passions was collecting fine art. He began traveling to London and New York in the 1950s to assemble a collection of European masters. In the early 1960s he began purchasing works by Cincinnati artists like Henry Farney and Edward Potthast.
Mr. Rudd also was a musician. As a youngster, he played piano in a silent movie theater. At Xavier University, he formed a band, 'Bud Rudd and the Ohio Collegians.' He also organized Xavier's first marching band.
Later, he was a founding member of the 'Rudihaka Jazz Band.' During the Depression, he supported himself by playing music in clubs as far away as New York City.
Mr. Rudd and his wife of 65 years, Grace C. Sweeny Rudd, who survives him, were patrons of the Cincinnati Symphony Or chestra and the May Festival. The couple hosted the inaugural party for symphony conductor Thomas Schippers in 1970.
He co-founded the Xavier Dad's Club in 1958 and the same year formed a fine arts museum at Xavier.
Mr. Rudd took graduate level courses in history at Xavier through the years and one day, while enrolling for more classes, was surprised to learn that he had earned enough credits for a master's degree in history. So, in 1976, at the age of 70, Mr. Rudd became one of Xavier's oldest recipients of a master's degree.
Other survivors include six children, Audrey Gruntler of Indianapolis, Robert of Orlando, Fla., and Margaret, Pierce, Martha Ann and William A. Jr., all of Cincinnati. He also is survived by eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Gilligan Funeral Home, 2926 Woodburn Ave., Walnut Hills.
A burial mass will be said at Mr. Rudd's parish, Holy Angels, at Madison and Grandin roads, at 10 a.m. Saturday. Memorials may be made to the Xavier University Endowment Fund.
