John P. Kiely, veteran trial lawyer
John Patrick Kiely, 63, whose law career spanned 30 years, died Monday.
'John had a unique rapport both with his fellow lawyers and with the juries before whom he presented his cases,' said his law partner, William Hutcherson.
'He will be sorely missed by the firm and his colleagues in the law and the bench.'
Mr. Kiely, of Delhi Township, spent his entire career with Rendigs, Fry, Kiely & Dennis, following in the footsteps of his father, John A. Kiely, one of the founding partners.
In 1982, he was elected as a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers.
The native Cincinnatian was a graduate of Elder High School, Xavier University and the University of Cincinnati College of Law.
He established the John P. Kiely Scholarship Fund at Elder High School.
Mr. Kiely was a past member of the U.S. Coast Guard pistol team and belonged to the National Rifle Association, Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association, the Cincinnati Revolver Club and the Cincinnati Athletic Club.
He leaves his wife, Marlene; son, Michael; daughter, Colleen Perry; sister Mayduane Longtin; and a granddaughter.

Lynn Goodwin Borgman, writer, publisher
Lynn Goodwin Borgman, a writer, publisher and wife of Cincinnati Enquirer editorial cartoonist Jim Borgman, died Wednesday. Ms. Borgman, of Hartwell, was 44.
Ms. Borgman underwent surgery Tuesday to ease chronic pain in her shoulder and neck.
Shortly after she returned home on Wednesday, she suffered an apparent heart attack.
The mother of Dylan and Chelsea Borgman, Ms. Borgman was lovingly portrayed as the mom in her husband's cartoon strip, 'Zits.' She was also a talented editor, writer and publisher, who was key to her husband's success as a nationally syndicated cartoonist.
'Lynn and Jim have always been a wonderful complement to one another,' said Harry M. Whipple, president and publisher of The Enquirer. 'Jim always credited Lynn as being the business and marketing and publishing side of his enterprises, whether it was the syndication of his work or the book publishing. Her death certainly leaves a hole in Jim's life.'
The Borgmans met while she was a senior theology major at Kenyon College in 1976.

Mary Gorman McManus, political leader
Mary Gorman McManus, 95, a social reformer, pioneer in women's political activism and one of the first women in Ohio to hold a high state office, died Tuesday at Mercy Fairfield Hospital.
Mrs. McManus came to Cincinnati in 1921, where she met and married the late former Ohio Supreme Court Justice Robert N. Gorman.
Shortly after her marriage, in 1928, Mrs. Gorman enrolled her in the Cincinnati Area League of Women Voters. It proved a jumping off point for her work in politics, as well as social reform.
In a 1995 interview with The Post, on the occasion of the League's 75th birthday, Mrs. McManus credited the league with her activism and her ultimate appointment as director of Ohio Public Welfare. She was appointed to the post by the late Ohio Gov. Michael V. DiSalle, in 1959, the first woman in the state to serve in a high cabinet post.
In 1946, when Mrs. Gorman became president of the Cincinnati League, it had 38 discussiongroups in progress and a membership of 385. She helped push membership to 1,100.
'She was a very determined person,' said her son, Judge Robert H. Gorman, judge on the Ohio 1st District Court of Appeals. 'There wasn't anything she felt she couldn't accomplish, and most of the time, she did. At the same time, she was a very caring person.'
She also served with the Committee for Slum Clearance, the State Housing Board and numerous other boards and committees. She was a Red Cross volunteer nurse's aide during World War II, was a member of the Hamilton County Mental Health Association, and founder and board member of the Ohio Mental Health Federation. She served as president of the Cincinnati Mental Health Council, and was a member of the Governor's Commission on Mental Health. She received the Good Neighbor Award from the Isaac M. Wise Temple in 1962 and the Top Women in Government Award in 1962 and 1965. In 1963 she was honored by the government of Jordan, for her work in public welfare.
Mrs. McManus moved from her home in Wyoming to Largo, Fla., in 1969, where she married the late Fred J. McManus in 1973. She returned to Cincinnati just last year and lived at Maple Knoll Retirement Village.
Mrs. McManus also leaves stepsons, F. Bruce and Donald McManus, of Bellaire, Fla., and the Rev. James McManus, of North Carolina; sister, Zelma Davies, of Hillsboro, Ohio; seven grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
