David Faulkner, Home State referee
David P. Faulkner, a lawyer who oversaw part of the state's recovery from the failure of Home State Savings Bank in the late 1980s, died Saturday. He was 69.
A partner in the firm of Faulkner & Tepe, Mr. Faulkner was regarded by colleagues as a fair and aggressive defense attorney.
In 1986, he concluded his legal career with an appointment as special referee in the Ohio Court of Claims. Mr. Faulkner presided over litigation in which the state recouped its losses from the failure of Home State Savings Bank.
'Coupled with his intensely competitive spirit in the courtroom was a strong sense of fairness - not mistreating people, not mistreating witnesses and playing by the rules of the court and the rules of our profession,' said Ohio Appellate Judge Robert Gorman.
An academic All-American football player at the University of Cincinnati before graduating in 1953, Mr. Faulkner gave up playing professional football to study the law. He graduated from the UC College of Law in 1955. Before attending the university, he served in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Faulkner leaves his wife of 36 years, Jane Faulkner; sons, Phillip Faulkner of St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Kyle Faulkner of San Francisco; and daughters, Cheryl Kelly of San Francisco, Sally Lynn of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands and Susan Saldin of Boise, Idaho.
