Robert J. Bollin, headed Winton Savings

Robert J. Bollin, who headed Winton Federal Savings & Loan for more than 30 years, died Thursday. He was 76.

Mr. Bollin joined Winton Building & Loan in 1955 as the managing officer and oversaw the thrift's growth until he retired from that position in 1986.

He remained active at the thrift and was vice president of Winton's board of directors at the time of his death.

Mr. Bollin, a 1941 graduate of Elder High School and a 1949 graduate of Chase Law School, was instrumental in the founding of La Salle High School and was an original board member of the school. He and his wife Mag co-chaired this fall's Elderama and raised more than $100,000 for the Price Hill high school.

Known to many simply as 'Mr. B,' Mr. Bollin moved the thrift from Winton Place to Monfort Heights in 1967 and oversaw its growth to a financial institution with more than $372 million in assets and five branches.

In 1986 he stepped down has head of Winton and was succeeded by his son, Robert L. Bollin.

Mr. Bollin was a past president of the Savings & Loan League of Southwestern Ohio and the American Savings & Loan Institute. In 1997 he was given the Industry Advocate Award by the Tri State Savings & Loan League for lifetime service to the thrift industry.

Family and friends say he was most proud of winning the Joe Budd Award in 1974, given for his commitment to Cincinnati Chapter 84 of the American Savings and Loan Institute, where he taught accounting for 12 years.

Mr. Bollin married Mary Ann Bollin in 1951 and the couple had five children. She died.
