William Read, lawyer and educator
William H. Read, 57, who worked in Cincinnati as a news reporter before becoming a lawyer and then a professor at Georgia Tech University, died of cancer Feb. 3 in Atlanta.
He was an expert in communications law, author or editor of a half-dozen books and a popular teacher. Mr. Read graduated from Covington Latin School in 1956 and attended Xavier University.
He worked for the Associated Press and United Press International in Cincinnati and in 1963 was a reporter for The Cincinnati Post.
Mr. Read went on to practice law in Washington, D.C., and worked on projects for the White House, U.S. Department of Commerce and U.S. Information Agency.
He was a member of the editorial advisory board of the Federal Communications Law Journal and was honored with the Federal Communications Bar Association's Distinguished Service Award, the highest award of the nation's communications lawyers.
Mr. Read moved from Washington to Atlanta in 1991 to teach at Georgia Tech, but remained active in communications law.
He leaves his wife of 32 years, Dorothy; sons Mark and David; daughter Lisa; mother Lauretta of Park Hills, Ky.; and brothers, Rick of Covington and Basil of Washington, D.C.

Ruth Ellen Henn, active volunteer
Ruth Ellen Skillings Henn, 65, who was active in her church, community and schools, died Monday.
The Montgomery resident was a graduate of Miami University and Christ Hospital School of Nursing. She served as president of the Deer Park PTA and was an aide with the science department at Sycamore High School. Mrs. Henn was active at Montgomery Presbyterian Church and in the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She leaves her husband, L. Paul Henn; son, David Paul Henn; daughters, Lisa Shawn Mulcahy and Kathleen Elizabeth Gruber; sisters, Barbara Ridenour and Janet McClintick; parents, Earl and Mary Elizabeth Skillings; and three grandchildren.

Ralph "Barney' Barhorst, scout leader
Ralph P. 'Barney' Barhorst, a Cincinnati Bell Telephone retiree and Boy Scout leader, died Tuesday. He was 78.
'He had so many friends, I think our place will be overrun after the funeral,' said Ethel Taylor Barhorst, his wife of 50 years.
The Florence resident was a member of Communications Workers of America Local 144 in Cincinnati and the Kilgore Chapter of Telephone Pioneers of America. He belonged to the Independence American Legion Post and was a past troop leader with the Independence Boy Scouts Troop 8.
He also leaves sons Barney, David and Robert; daughters Cathy Hopper, Patricia Sipple, Peggy Orcutt, Martha Gross and Mary Combs; brother, Jim Barhorst; 17 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Robert James Oates, retired city firefighter
Retired Cincinnati firefighter Robert James Oates died Wednesday at age 86.
Oates began his career with the Cincinnati Fire Department in 1942 and spent 32 years in service until his 1974 retirement. His last assign ment was as an engineer with En gine Company 14.
Oates was an avid baseball play er, boxer and baseball player who spent much of his retirement watching his grandchildren's sporting activities.
He graduated from St. Xavier High School and was an usher at St. Xavier Church. Oates also was a member of the Fireman's Holy Name Society.
Survivors include daughters Patricia Telger of Price Hill, Judith Paff and Kathleen Finkelmeier, both of Delhi Hills. His son Robert James Oates III died in 1968 while serving the U.S. Army in Vietnam.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Vitt, Stermer and Anderson Funeral Home, Delhi Township. Mass of Christian burial is 10 a.m. Monday in St. Xavier Church. Memorials may be made to the Elder or Seton High School scholarship funds.
