Bert Sells, GE engineer, volunteer and father
When a nurse entered Bert E. Sells' hospital room at Bethesda North about a week ago, she asked him what he did all of his life. He replied, 'I'm a family man.'
That's what was important to Mr. Sells - his wife, seven children and 13 grandchildren.
His highly successful career as an engineer at General Electric and his community involvement took a back seat to his family. 'His family mattered more to him than anything else,' said one of his daughters, Elisabeth Faber of Cincinnati.
Mr. Sells, 81, of Wyoming died Monday after suffering a stroke on Feb. 10.
For 40 years, he worked at GE and was recognized for his expertise with aircraft gas turbine technologies. He went to work at GE Evendale in 1952 and served in various management positions until his retirement in 1982. In 1989, Mr. Sells was inducted into the GE Propulsion Hall of Fame.
After his retirement, he became very active in community affairs and worked with the Explorer Scouts for 12 years. He also helped establish the Talking Books Program for the Cincinnati Association of the Blind. Under the program, retired GE engineers repair talking books.
The Valley Interfaith Food and Clothing Center, which serves needy families, also benefited from his community effort.
Mr. Sells was a longtime member of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a former president of the Cincinnati and Ohio chapters and most recently was treasurer-general of the national organization.
In 1997, Mr. Sells was awarded the Ohio chapter's highest honor, the Hub Scott medal. He helped raise more than $1 million and recruit new members to the national organization. In 1998, it bestowed its highest honor, the Minuteman Award, on Mr. Sells.
Mr. Sells leaves his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Sells; other daughters, Julia Sells and Janet Hertlein, both of Cincinnati, Meredith Klein of California and Mary Sells of Boston; sons, Ralph Sells of Cincinnati and Jon Sells of Florida; sisters, Virginia Jones of Wichita, and Martha McQuown of Texas ; and a brother, George Sells of Albuquerque.
