Grailville founder memorial

A special memorial service will be held March 12 at Grailville for Lydwine van Kersbergen, who helped establish the Grail movement in the U.S. and founded Grailville in Loveland in 1944.

Ms. van Kersbergen died Dec. 24 in the Netherlands, where she is buried.

A pioneer in promoting education of women for leadership in church and society, Ms. van Kersbergen, a native of the Netherlands, played a key role in establishing the Grail movement in the Netherlands, England, Scotland, Australia and the U.S.

The Grail Movement takes its name from the search for the Holy Grail of The Last Supper and the symbolic quest for good that the search represents. While the Grail Movement is centered around women, it is not limited to women.

Grailville, in Loveland, served for many years as national headquarters for the Grail movement, and although the movement is now decentralized, remains the largest U.S. Grail center. It is an education and conference center located on 300 acres in Loveland.

The memorial service for Ms. van Kersbergen will begin at 7 p.m. March 12, followed by a Eucharist at 8 p.m. at the Grailville Oratory.

David Pollak, industrialist, civic leader

David Pollak, Cincinnati industrialist, civic leader and World War II pilot and prisoner of war, died Thursday at Christ Hospital. He was 81.

Although his career was in the steel industry, starting with work at Pollak Steel in Marion, Ohio, a company founded by his grandfather during the Civil War, Pollak himself said his life was shaped by his experiences as a prisoner of war.

In 1942, Pollak enlisted in the U.S. Army, graduated from the Luke Air Force Base and became a B-17 bomber pilot. He was shot down on his 13th mission over Holland in July 1943 after a bombing run to Kassel, Germany. He was captured by the Gestapo and was a POW for 21 months, including time spent at Stalag Luft III, the POW camp on which 'The Great Escape' was based.

According to fellow POW Lt. Gen. (ret.) Albert P. Clark, Pollak volunteered for 'many risky and valuable assignments for the escape project.'

Pollak said his experiences in the camp and on a forced march to Moosburg shaped his life.

'You went through shocking times, times for which you were not prepared,' Pollak told friends. 'If it didn't do anything else, it steeled your backbone so that if you were in a tough situation...you realized you could handle anything.'

He credited his survival in large part to the Red Cross and dedicated much of his life to it. He was a president of the Cincinnati Area Chapter, and in 1998, received the prestigious Clara Barton Award for 50 years of service and leadership.

A graduate of Walnut Hills High School, Phillips Exeter Academy and Cornell University, Pollak returned to work in the steel industry after leaving the Army. He worked up to president of Pollak Steel, where he remained until the company was sold to Armco Steel in 1970. He served as vice chairman of Xtek Inc. from 1974 to 1981.

In 1984, he founded and was president of the Johnny Bench Distributing Co., later the Ultimate Distributing Co.

He has served on numerous business and civic boards, including Xtek Inc., Continental Steel and Scallan Supply. He also served as president of the Commonwealth Club, vice president of the Commercial Club, director of the Fifth Third Bank, president of the Hamilton County Regional Airport Authority and member of the President's Council for Xavier University.

He was an accomplished horseman and polo player, and enjoyed golf, fishing and shooting. He loved hockey and was founder and the first coach of the Boys' Amateur Ice Hockey League of Cincinnati.

Pollak leaves his wife of 52 years, Loraine Evans Pollak; four sons, David of Cincinnati, Steve E. of Atlanta, Craig H. of South Riding, Va. and Bradley E. Pollak of Rochester, N.Y.; a brother, Julian Pollak of Arlington, Va.; a sister, Betty Rauh of Yellow Springs, Ohio, and six grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Indian Hill Church. Memorials: Cincinnati Area Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The Cincinnati native worked at schools in Ohio, Michigan, New Mexico and Colorado. When Detroit riots erupted in 1967, Sister Magdalen Louise distributed food and clothing to residents and other victims.

She was awarded the Spirit of Detroit Award when she retired in 1992.

'The last 30 years I have been privileged to serve among the poor and minority people of Detroit,' she said at the time. 'It has been a dream realized for me.'

Sister of Charity Juliana Barhorst, a friend, remembers her as someone who '...served generously, cheerfully and lovingly whenever and wherever she could. And what she did, she did so well.'

Sister Magdalene Louise is survived by several nieces and nephews.
