Robert Conley, of Union Institute

Dr. Robert T. Conley, president of the Union Institute and credited with its financial rescue, died Tuesday of an apparent heart attack at his home in Blue Ash. He was 67.

Mr. Conley took on the presidency of the Union Institute in 1982 at a time when the private university faced financial and enrollment problems. Within the year, he had reorganized the Institute and got it back on its feet.

During his tenure, Mr. Conley also expanded the university's academic learning centers in Miami, Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Diego and oversaw the development of the pioneering Center for Distance Learning.

The Union Institute, founded in 1964, is a private university offering bachelors and doctoral degrees through its Cincinnati and other centers. The university's permanent home, which was also established by Mr. Conley, is in the former Beau Brummel and Gruen Watch buildings on McMillan Avenue.

Prior to joining the Union Institute, Mr. Conley served as president of Seton Hall University, and also was a vice president and director of planning for health affairs at Wright State University.

The graduate of Seton Hall and Princeton Universities leaves his wife, Doris; daughters, Debra Henderson Wand and Robin Barbiea; son Bryan; and five grandchildren.

Roman Chaike, auto racing buff

Roman Chaike, an auto-racing buff and an early financial backer of the sport, died at his home in Spring Hill, Fla., Saturday. He was 87.

Once the oldest working mechanic at the Indianapolis 500, Mr. Chaike participated in NASCAR events in the early 1950s, was a part-owner of the Lawrenceburg Speedway and enjoyed restoring antique automobiles.

The native Cincinnatian was best known among Midwestern racing fans for his activity at venues such as the old Cincinnati Race Bowl and the Dayton Speedway.

'When he was very young he had to support his mother and sister, and his one passion was owning a nice automobile,' said daughter JoAnne Hamilton. 'It didn't have to be an expensive automobile, but it had to be a nice one.'

Mr. Chaike helped his son, Roman 'Ray' Chaike, start a three-year NASCAR racing career from 1953 to 1956. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Mr. Chaike owned the Lawrenceburg Speedway with his daughter and son-in-law.

He also restored Model A Fords. He owned a rebuilt 1931 Roadster and had been working on a 1931 Model A Ford pickup truck just before his death.

Perhaps the crowning moment to Mr. Chaike's racing career came in the late 1980s, when he worked as a mechanic with the Hoffman Auto Racing team in the Indianapolis 500.

'Here's all these young individuals on race day at the Indianapolis 500, and there's my father in his 70s, wearing his uniform and going over the wall,' Ms. Hamilton said.

Mr. Chaike also leaves his wife of 66 years, Virginia Shane Chaike.

Visitation: 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at Chas. A. Miller Sons Funeral Service, Northside. Services: 1 p.m. Friday at St. Bernard Church of Taylors Creek.
