Fred Hubbell, Lebanon municipal judge
Lebanon Municipal Court Judge Fred Hubbell died Thursday at his home of an apparent heart attack. He was 56.
An affable and likable lawyer, Hubbell was a friend to most in the small-town communities of Waynesville, where he was born, and Lebanon, where he practiced law.
'He was a very nice guy, very well liked,' said Sandy Fuston, a longtime family friend, neighbor and owner of Lebanon's Village Ice Cream Shop, where Hubbell often joined friends for food and talk.
'He was instrumental in getting the shop started. He was our corporate lawyer,' Ms. Fuston said. 'He was also an old friend - his family were friends of my family's. He used to be in here all the time eating at our businessmen's table.'
Hubbell also was a friend of the reclusive astronaut Neil Armstrong, a neighbor who was the first man to walk on the moon.
A municipal court judge since 1995, Hubbell also frequently hosted visiting foreign exchange students, an extension of his work in Nigeria with the Peace Corps after his college graduation.
A former Warren County School Board member, Hubbell, a Republican, was appointed to the municipal bench in 1995 to fill an unexpired term. He was elected later in 1995 and re-elected in 1997.
He was a graduate of Vanderbilt University and received his law degree from Chase Law School. He spent two years in Nigeria as a Peace Corps member.
Hubbell also served a four-year term on the Waynesville School Board and a two-year term on the board of the Warren County Joint Vocational School.
He leaves one brother, Mike Hubbell, of Lebanon.
