Arthur C. "Ace' Elliott, U.S. marshal

Arthur C. 'Ace' Elliott, who in 1966 became the first black U.S. marshal in America outside the District of Columbia, died Saturday.

Mr. Elliott, 81, had been ill in recent years in the wake of a massive stroke in 1982.

A native of suburban Wyoming, he played football at Wyoming High School, where he was nicknamed 'Ace,' which stayed with him the rest of his life. He also was captain of the football team at Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he earned a political science degree.

Mr. Elliott was a U.S. Army sergeant during World War II and later received a law degree by attending night school at the Chase College of Law. In 1954, he became the first black court bailiff in Hamilton County and in 1966 was appointed U.S. marshal in Cincinnati by President Lyndon Johnson.

Mr. Elliott's wife of 49 years, Mary 'Billie' Elliott, said Sunday that her late husband 'didn't make race an issue and treated all people alike.'

In 1970, he Elliott accepted an appointment as trustee for Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases filed in federal court in Cincinnati.

In 1972, he declined an appointment by Gov. John Gilligan to the Hamilton County Municipal Court bench, saying he preferred to remain a bankruptcy referee because he considered the position 'more relevant for helping people.'

Mr. Elliott also worked in private law practice, served as an assistant Ohio attorney general, was city solicitor of Lincoln Heights and for four years was chief referee in Hamilton County Domestic Relations Court.

He was president of the board of trustees of Drake Memorial County Hospital and served as a trustee for the Better Business Bureau, Legal Aid Society, Provident Hospital, Valley Homes, YMCA, Colored Orphan Home, Home State Savings & Loan, Salvation Army and the Cincinnati Citizens Police Association.

Other survivors include a daughter, Bonita Primous; a brother, John Paul Elliott; three sisters, Edith Bushillon, Susan Carroll and Inez Christian, and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Andrews Church, 1809 Rutland Ave., followed by noon services. Memorials may be made to St. Andrews. Jamison & Jamison Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Irwin Carroll, 97, prep track and field official

Irwin J. Carroll, an early pioneer of the fitness walking craze and one of Cincinnati's most respected high school track officials, died Sunday. He was 97.

'I've been running and officiating track since I was 16 years old,' he told The Post in 1986. 'I was known for my running ability when I was growing up in the West End.'

He joined the YMCA in his youth and worked with that organization the rest of his life. He also ran a roofing company from his Pleasant Ridge home.

During his officiating career, Mr. Carroll worked in the Pan American Games and other international meets.

He was president, coach and member of the American Walkers Association, and he and his wife, Catherine, regularly competed in national walking competitions.

He also was president of the Ohio Valley Volleyball Officials Association and vice president of the Ohio Valley Track Officials Association.

He started a volleyball program at the Powel Crosley YMCA and regularly coached tennis, swimming and volleyball for generations of Cincinnati children. Despite suffering a stroke in his 80s, he celebrated his 90th birthday in the Crosley Y pool after an aquatics exercise class.

He was the recipient of the 1979 Francis Award given by the Friars Club for his service to youth.

He also leaves his daughter Sheila Carroll; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Nativity of Our Lord Church in Pleasant Ridge, where Mr. Carroll served as an altar boy and went on to found the Nativity Boosters Club.

Eugene W. Hille, was executive with Paine Webber

Eugene W. Hille, who worked as divisional first vice president for Paine Webber Inc. and was deeply involved in his church, died Friday. He was 61.

The Elder High School and Xavier University graduate started as a stockbroker and investment adviser in 1959. He first worked for W.E. Hutton and eventually helped Paine Webber open a Cincinnati office in 1975.

Mr. Hille also served on the boards of several Catholic religious orders in Cincinnati and often helped out with community fund-raising projects.

He was a member of the Cincinnati Stock Exchange and Bond Club and the Bankers Club. At Xavier, Mr. Hille was a member of the Gamma Phi fraternity. He also attended the New York School of Finance.

Mr. Hille leaves his wife, Peggy; daughters, Elizabeth and Christina; and son, Peter.

Arrangements were through B.J. Meyer Sons Funeral Homes. Memorials: St. Lawrence Church Memorial/Educational Fund or any charity.

Anthony Gambino, Cincinnati lawyer and veteran

Anthony Gambino, 73, of Clifton, an attorney for over 40 years in Cincinnati, died Saturday. Mr. Gambino served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was Honorary Consular Agent for Italy from the mid-1950s to 1995.

He leaves his wife of 51 years, Gertrud'Trudy' Gambino; a daughter, Rebecca Roessner; sons, Anthony W. Gambino and Daniel S. Gambino; and five grandchildren.

Mass: 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church, Camp Washington . Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today at Miller-Busse & Borgmann Funeral Home, Clifton.

Bertha Lugar Caldwell, Indiana senator's mother

Bertha Green Lugar Caldwell, the mother of U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar, died Monday at an Indianapolis hospital following a long battle with pneumonia. She was 92.

Sen. Lugar, R-Ind., was en route to Washington, D.C., when she died following an 11-day hospitalization, said Thomas R. Lugar, the senator's younger brother.

Mrs. Caldwell had served as a member of the National Republican Committee, the National Federation of Republican Women and the Indiana Republican Committee. She was a graduate of Butler University.

Mrs. Caldwell married twice, outliving two husbands.

Her first husband, Marvin L. Lugar, with whom she had three children, died in 1956; her second husband, Howard C. Caldwell, died in 1973. She leaves a daughter, Anne Lugar Johnson; stepson, Howard C. Caldwell, Jr.; 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Methodist Church, Indianapolis. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Leppert & Hensley Mortuary, Indianapolis.
