Virgil R. Lagaly, athlete and businessman
Virgil R. Lagaly, 83, a standout athlete at Elder High School and Xavier University, died Tuesday of complications of heart problems and diabetes..
'He has a world of friends in Cincinnati and across the U.S.,' said friend Joseph Kruse. 'He was a good family man and a respected, successful businessman.'
After college, the Western Hills native - whose nickname was 'Legs' - pitched in the minor leagues. He served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Lagaly's business career began with Standard Electrical Tool Co. He later started the Virgil R. Lagaly Co., and was co-owner of U.S. Electrical Tool Co. He retired in 1990.
His wife of 49 years, Marion Brinker Lagaly, said her husband 'was both a gentleman and a gentle man.'
He also leaves a daughter, Ann Seitz Adams of Bridgetown; son, Francis E. Lagaly of Price Hill; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Arrangements were through B.J. Meyer Sons Funeral Home. Memorials: Our Lady of Victory Church Memorial Fund.

Services for developer Harold Flannery
Services for Harold Flannery, the Clermont County developer who died early Wednesday in a fire at his home, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Moore Family Funeral Homes, Batavia.
Mr. Flannery, 64, of Batavia Township, was found in his bed shortly after 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. The fire may have been sparked by lit smoking material, fire officials said.
Mr. Flannery's wife, Shirley, burned her hands in the fire and was treated at Mercy Hospital Anderson.
Mr. Flannery had a long association with Clermont County and with county officials and developers there. He spearheaded the 1980 development of Eastgate Mall.
Other survivors are two daughters: Kelly Hacker of Union Township, Clermont County, and Rachel Bollinger of Blue Ash; a son, Harold Flannery of Union Township, Clermont County; a brother, Horace Flannery of Hyde Park; and four grandchildren.
Visitation is from 4:30 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Grant Owings, chief counsel for Midland Co.
Grant Owings, vice president and chief counsel of the Midland Co. for 30 years, died Thursday at Hospice of Cincinnati. He was 71.
Mr. Owings started in Midland's legal department in 1962. Before that he worked for the law firm of Dinsmore and Shohl, and before that he was administrative assistant to the Hamilton County Commissioners.
He also served as Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio in the 1950s.
During the 1980s, he served as a member of the Ohio Public Utilities Commission Nominating Council as the appointee of the House Speaker.
Mr. Owings was a candidate for the State Legislature in 1956 and 1958. From 1958-1960, he was chairman of the Hamilton County Democratic Legislative Committee. He also was a member of the City Charter Committee Board of Directors from 1957-1959 and served as vice president of the Hamilton County Good Government League from 1957-1960.
Mr. Owings was educated in the Norwood Public Schools and graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Arts and Sciences and College of Law, where he served as editor-in-chief of the UC Law Review. He later served on the Board of Visitors and the Dean's Council of the UC Law School.
He was a member of the McMicken Society; the American, Ohio, Florida and Cincinnati bar associations; Kilwinning Lodge No. 356 F&AM; Jaycees; and Pompano Beach Order of Elks.
Survivors include a brother, Malcolm W. Owings of Pinehurst, N.C.; and four nieces.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Blue Ash Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Gilligan Funeral Home, Kenwood. Mr. Owings will be cremated and his ashes will be scattered off Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Thomas Canavan, civic leader
Thomas J. Canavan, 68, a former vice president of AT&T and an active member of Cincinnati's downtown community, died Saturday of cancer at his home in Indian Hill. He was 68.
Mr. Canavan was active in Downtown Cincinnati Inc. and was former president of the Downtown Council. He was chairman of the United Way 1986 campaign and was awarded the Neil McElroy Award for United Way leadership.
'This is a man who was totally dedicated to his family and his community,' said long-time friend John Beatty, of Mariemont.
Mr. Canavan was an engineering graduate of the University of New Hampshire and, after college, began a 35-year career with AT&T. He came to Cincinnati in 1978 as network vice president.
Mr. Canavan leaves his wife, Jacquelyn Doherty Canavan; three sons, Steven J., of Jackson, Ga., Paul T., of Lead, S.D. and David S. Canavan, of Mason, Ohio; two daughters, Joan Roettenberger, of Troy, Mich., and Jennifer Averill, of Rocky River, Ohio; three brothers, two sisters and 11 grandchildren.
Mass will be at 1 p.m. today at All Saints Catholic Church, 8939 Montgomery Road, Sycamore Township. Memorials: United Way & Community Chest, the Leukemia Society of America or Hospice of Cincinnati.
