Julia Walters Black, teacher who loved kids
Former students always had something nice to say about Julia Walters Black, their old English teacher who had taught at Highlands High School for 28 years.
'They'd say, "She was my favorite teacher. I'll always remember Mrs. Black. She taught me how to write,' ' said Mrs. Black's daughter-in-law, Jayne Black of Fort Thomas. 'She loved teaching. She just loved the young people.'
Julia Black, 79, of Fort Thomas, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Fort Thomas. She also was an actress with Theater Productions in Fort Thomas in the 1950's, and was a member of Delta Delta Sorority.
'She was our source of sunshine,' said Jayne Black. 'She supported us in everything we did, in all our endeavors she was very encouraging. She loved life and lived it to the fullest, and we were proud to be part of her. She was wonderful, she really was.' Other survivors include her sons, John Edford Black of Fort Thomas and Stephen Walters Black of Southport, Conn.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Sister Elaine Mueller, teacher
Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Elaine Mueller, formerly Sister Mary Francis, died Thursday at Mother Margaret Hall nursing home in Delhi Township at the age of 74.
A native Cincinnatian, Sister Mueller was born in Price Hill.
Sister Mueller served primarily as a high school business teacher, but started her teaching career with intermediate grades at St. Elizabeth School in Cincinnati.
She taught at the high school level in the Dayton, Ohio, area, and also in Michigan and Colorado.
Later, she moved into religious education and pastoral ministry, serving mainly in Colorado.
Illness forced her to retired to Mother Margaret Hall in 1992.
She leaves her sisters, Carol Stetter and Roberta Padur, both of Delhi, Joan Williams of Lawrenceburg, Ind., and Jean Matthews of New Jersey.
Mass: 6 p.m. April 16 in the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse Chapel, Delhi. Visitation: 5 p.m. April 16 at the motherhouse.

Fred L. Armbruster Sr., city firefighter
Fred L. Armbruster Sr. enjoyed careers in aviation and fire fighting.
He served in the Army Air Corps during two wars and participated in early atomic bomb testing, all the while remaining an active member of the Cincinnati Fire Department.
Mr. Armbruster, 82, of Carthage died Thursday.
As a young man, Mr. Armbruster worked full time as an apprentice mechanic at Queen City Flying Service at Lunken Fred Armbruster Airport while learning to fly. He joined the fire department, then at the start of World War II joined the Army Air Corps. The Army sent him to flight school to learn to fly bombers.
After the war, he returned to the fire department only to be recalled to active duty for the
Korean War. During his tour of duty, he was a member of the 4925th Atomic Test Group in Albuquerque and later the Indian Springs air base in Yucca Flats, Nev.
He retired from the Cincinnati Fire Department as a lieutenant in 1974.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Armbruster; daughters, Nancy Sigel and Vivian Duncan; a son, Frederick L. Armbruster Jr.; sisters, Eleanor Eckhoff and Marian Cheseman; and four grandchildren.
Services: 10 a.m. Monday at Hodapp Funeral Home, Carthage. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials: Salvation Army or the charity of the donor's choice.

Anna Pearl Poynter, supermarket owner
Some knew her as 'Nanny' and others as 'Anna Pearl,' but everyone acquainted with Anna Pearl Poynter was aware of her energy.
'She used to say she hit the ground running,' said her grandson, Jim Poynter.
Mrs. Poynter, 93, of Florence, died Sunday in St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. Mrs. Poynter and her husband, William, owned and operated Poynter's Supermarket in Hebron.
The store, which also had an ice house, may have been one of the first discount operations in the area, Poynter said.
Mrs. Poynter, a native of Washington County, and her husband had operated groceries in Cincinnati before opening the Hebron store in the mid 1950s, said her grandson.
Along with the business, Mrs. Poynter was also active in civic endeavors, including volunteer work with the Boone County Community Action Commission. In 1980, Mrs. Poynter was honored by the Covington-Kenton County Jaycees as the Outstanding Senior Citizen in Northern Kentucky. She also received the Daniel Boone Award for service from the Boone County Fiscal Court in 1984.
Mrs. Poynter was a member of Hebron Baptist Church.
Her husband died in 1987.
Survivors include a son, William H. Poynter of Florence; sisters, Katherine Goosmann of Hebron and Ruth Brown of Cincinnati; 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Hebron Baptist Church. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Burial will be in Hebron Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials: Hebron Baptist Church, 1488 Petersburg Road, Hebron, Ky., 41048.
