Bert Chandler, World War II POW and GE engineer
Bert A. Chandler, a World War II prisoner of war who went on to a 35-year career as a General Electric Co. jet-engine engineer, died Friday of complications from heart surgery. He was 74.
The Finneytown resident was a tail gunner in the Army Air Corps and in 1945 was shot down over Hungary. He injured his leg when he parachuted from the plane and later was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a prisoner of war for nine months.
Mr. Chandler, who was a member of St. Bartholomew Church, went on to earn a chemical engineering degree from Ohio State University. He retired from GE Evendale in 1986.
'He loved his family,' according to a daughter, Susan M. Chandler, of Baltimore. 'He also loved the beach. He just liked to walk the beach and be a beach bum. He also loved birds'
He also leaves his wife of 40 years, Kathryn; another daughter, Lynn A. DiBartolomeo of Louisville; son, William A. Chandler of Liberty Township; brother, Robert Chandler of Erie, Pa.; and two granddaughters.
Arrangements were through Hodapp Funeral Home, College Hill.

Walter G. Frede, Army veteran and Post pressman
Walter G. Frede, 91, of Delhi Township, a retired pressman for The Cincinnati Post, died Sunday.
Mr. Frede, who started at The Post in 1928, was a decorated World War II Army veteran who served in North Africa and Europe. After the war, he returned to work at The Post until 1974.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary C. O'Rourke Frede, and leaves a daughter, Mary H. Frede.

James Wallace McBride, engineer, GE designer
Aviation design pioneer James Wallace McBride, a former compressor designer with the jet engine division at GE Evendale, died Monday.
Mr. McBride grew up in Winnipeg, Canada, building model airplanes. He designed his own model wings, one of which held a non-powered flight record for 52 years. During World War II, he worked in England on several classified projects for the Allies.
After the war, Mr. McBride taught aeronautical engineering at Purdue University until 1948, when he joined the Carrier Corp. to design high-speed compressor systems. In 1956, he came to Cincinnati to join GE. His ideas and theories about jet engines, and his advanced compressor designs, helped the company become one of the premier jet engine manufacturers in the world.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Krehbiel McBride; a son, Graham McBride; stepchildren, Joan Montezemolo, Susan Holzapfel and Charles W. Krehbiel Jr.; two grandchildren and eight step-grandchildren. His first wife, Jayne McBride, died in 1994.

Sister Grace Murphy, was order's assistant treasurer
Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Grace Murphy, assistant treasurer for the order, died Sunday at Franciscan Hospital, Western Hills Campus. She was 49.
The Michigan native was a Sister of Charity for 31 years and was to assume the position of executive treasurer on July 1.
'Grace's quiet presence and her wonderful Irish wit will be missed,' said Sister Mary Ellen Murphy, president of the order and sister of Sister Grace. 'She was very special to me as my sister and as a Sister of Charity.'
Sister Grace was a graduate of the University of Albuquerque and taught for six years at Carroll High School in Dayton. After receiving her master's degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame in 1981, she worked in the finance office at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati and later served as financial analyst for the Sisters of Charity Health Care Systems.
In 1995, she was among nine Sisters of Charity who answered the call of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops for religious volunteers to help churches in central and eastern Europe.
She leaves other sisters, Martha Shaw of Hastings, Mich., Patricia Murphy of Millspring, N.C., and Maureen Dostert of Hobe Sound, Fla; brothers, Msgr. Michael Murphy of Lansing, Mich., Jerome Murphy of Holiday, Fla., John Murphy of Rochester, Mich., and William Murphy of Grand Rapids, Mich.
Visitation: 3 to 6 p.m. today at the Motherhouse auditorium, Delhi Township, followed by Mass at 6:30 p.m.

Sister Marie Evans, teacher
Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Marie Canice Evans, 90, died Saturday at Mother Margaret Hall Nursing Home in Delhi Township. Born Anne Evans in Ireland, she was a Sister of Charity for 68 years.
Sister Evans came to America when she was 18, earned a bachelor of arts degree in education from the College of Mount St. Joseph, and she taught for 41 years in Ohio, Colorado, Illinois and Michigan. In Cincinnati, she taught at St. Lawrence School in Price Hill.
From 1973 until her retirement in 1989, she served as a sister-visitor at Kettering Convalescent Center.
'Sister Marie Canice was a soft-spoken Irish lady,' said Sister Maura Landers, a longtime friend. 'She was always interested in other people.'
Mass was today at the Motherhouse.

Edward Naegele, upholsterer
Edward John Naegele, who worked as an upholsterer in Cincinnati, died Monday at age 94. He lived in Delhi Township.
Mr. Naegele had been married twice and survived both wives, Anna Corcoran Naegele and Angela Fister Naegele.
He is survived by three daughters, Norma Bachmann, Virginia Lunn and Nancy Edwards; a brother, John Naegele; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
