ROBERT BRADLEY TRUMBO SR., 69, of Silverton, died Friday. He was a machinist at GE. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Thompson, Hall and Jordan Funeral Home, Silverton. Visitation: 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

John L. Iliff, security expert and fireman

A sense of duty and commitment marked the life of John L. Iliff of Hanover, Ind. He died Thursday at age 82.

Mr. Iliff spent a long career in the military and in civil service. He served in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant in the Chemical Corps while stationed in Alabama during World War II. He left active military duty in 1944 and served as Provost Marshal at the former Bunker Hill Air Force Base in Peru, Ind., from 1944 to 1947. He also served as chief of security for the Department of Defense at several military installations, including the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant in Charlestown, Ind.

He graduated from Peru High School in 1935 and became a firefighter. From 1947 to 1950, Mr. Iliff worked as a railroad detective between Albuquerque, N.M., and El Paso, Texas . He later moved to the Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona where he was chief of security and intelligence from 1960 to 1974. He loved horses and collected firearms.

Mr. Iliff was a 50-year member of the Masons. He also was a member of the Elks Lodge, the  Jefferson Post of the American Legion and the Indiana Sheriffs Association.

He leaves his wife, Patricia J. Miller Iliff; a daughter, Mary E. Iliff-Gauck and a son, Robert J. Iliff; seven grandchildren and his good friend, Lt. Col. (USAF retired) Bob Oakley of Arizona.

Services are private. Arrangements: Morgan-Webster-Nay Funeral Home, Madison, Ind.

City planner George Hayward

Renowned urban planner and landscape architect George Curtis Hayward, 89, who helped plan what is currently downtown Cincinnati, died Sunday.

The Richmond, Ind., native moved to the Queen City in 1948 to become the principal planner of the Cincinnati Metropolitan Master Plan.

Among his accomplishments in Cincinnati were designing the Dr. Albert B. Sabin Cincinnati Convention Center, Riverfront Stadium, the skywalk system and St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Anderson Township.

In 1976, Mr. Hayward moved to Shaker Heights, Ohio, and spent five years at Cleveland Heights' Planning and Development Department.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. today at the Heights Christian Church, Shaker Heights.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy; a son, George J. of Cincinnati; a daughter-in-law Christine Hayward-Goetz, Taos, N.M.; stepsons, Lincoln O'Brien, Forest Hills, N.Y., and David O'Brien, Tapei, Taiwan; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Mary Barbara Wolfer, nurse supervisor

Mary Barbara Wolfer, 64, of the Oakley-Hyde Park area, died Friday.

She was a registered nurse who supervised nursing operations for facilities in several cities and countries, including  Oklahoma City and Pakistan.

She also worked with the U.S. Air Force and Navy in Vietnam for the Agency for International Development.

She most recently worked at long-term care facilities in Batavia.

She held a master's degree in nursing from the University of Cincinnati.

She leaves her mother, Mary Wolfer of Cincinnati, and a brother, Edward Wolfer of Hollywood, Fla.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday at St. Cecilia Church in Oakley. Visitation: 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Witt, Good and Kelsch Funeral Home, 3026 Madison Road, Oakley. Memorials to the church or St. Margaret Hall at 1960 Madison Road.

TONY E. COURTNEY, 78, of Madison, Ind., died Thursday. Mr. Courtney was a retired Air Force veteran of World War II and the Korean War and formerly worked in the maintenance department at Reliance. Services: 11 a.m. EST Monday at Morgan-Webster-Nay Funeral Home, Madison, Ind. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. EST Sunday and 10 a.m. EST until time of services Monday at the funeral home. Jane Young, loved family, church

Jane Young left a legacy for her eight grandchildren - hand-sewn, personalized quilts.

'She made a quilt for each of them,' said her son, Eugene Young. Mrs. Young, 79, of Owenton, Ky., died Sunday. She and her late husband, Leon, once operated a grocery in Bethany, Ky., and she was a clerk for First Farmers Bank in Owenton. She was a member of Elk Lick Baptist Church.

Other survivors include two daughters, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at McDonald Funeral Home, Owenton. Visitation: 4-9 tonight. Memorials: Elk Lick Baptist Church, Owenton.

Norbert J. Giver, businessman - and family man

Norbert J. Giver, a printer and longtime Cincinnati resident, died Sunday following a stroke. He was 82.

Mr. Giver was a successful businessman, but friends and family will remember him for his ability to turn any gathering into a fun time and for friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Following service in the U.S. Army in India during World War II, Mr. Giver purchased Volts-Thomas Printing Co., later known as VTI Graphics. He sold it in 1987 and began a coupon business in Norwood with his son, John, of Cincinnati. Until his death, he still met regularly with grade school friends from Evanston, fellow veterans and colleagues from work.

Mr. Giver, of Hyde Park, who was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Holy Angels Church, leaves his wife of 52 years, Ann; other sons, Tom and Gregg, of Cincinnati; and daughters, Carol Risser of Narvon, Pa., and Susan Alexander of Knoxville, Tenn.

Mass: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Angels Church, Grandin Road. Visitation: 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at George Rohde & Son, Mount Lookout.

Katie Luchsinger, young heroine

Mass for Katie Luchsinger, 11, who died after saving her brother and sister from a house fire Sunday, will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Visitation Church, Green Township. A reception will follow the service in the church's auditorium at 8 p.m.

The Miami Township youngster perished during the blaze after rousing her older brother, Danny Luchsinger, 13, who has cerebral palsy, and her sister, Meagan, 10.

Danny remains in serious condition at Children's Hospital with injuries suffered in the fire. The children's parents, Robert and Terri Luchsinger, were not at home when the blaze broke out.

The Hamilton County Sheriff is continuing to investigate.

Memorials: Children's Hospital Medical Center or United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Cincinnati.
