Funeral services on Tuesday for former Sen. William Bowen
Funeral services for former Ohio Sen. William F. Bowen will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Baptist Church, 630 Glenwood Ave., Avondale.
Sen. Bowen died Thursday at age 70 after battling cancer and heart problems in recent months.
The Cincinnati Democrat served as a state representative for three years before moving to the Senate where he served from 1970 to 1994.
Sen. Bowen grew up in Cincinnati's impoverished West End neighborhood. He rose to become president of the Cincinnati NAACP branch in 1958-64, then turned his attention to politics.
He departed the Senate as its longest-serving African-American member.
Sen. Bowen battled for improved and fair housing, equal rights, affirmative action and minority set-aside laws in the Senate. He left a legacy in the Senate of trying to help the poor and a message to his colleagues upon his retirement, saying, 'Remember those who are the least among us!'
Visitation for Sen. Bowen will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Thompson, Hall & Jordan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sadie Reinhart, raised orphaned grandchildren
After the fire at the Beverly Hills Supper Club took the life of her daughter in 1977, Sadie Reinhart became a mother again at the age of 62.
She quit her factory job to raise her daughter's four orphaned children, who were between the ages of 5 and 14.
'She cared for them like they were her own,' said her son, William Reinhart. 'She was a super lady. She worked hard all of her life.'
Mrs. Reinhart died Monday at her granddaughter's home in Covington. The Cold Spring, Ky., resident was 84.
Her daughter, Nora Lee Ellison, died in the supper club fire that claimed 165 lives. The father of three of Mrs. Ellison's children also died in the blaze.
Less than five years later, Mrs. Reinhart's husband of nearly 50 years, Edward, died, leaving her to raise the children on her own into her 70s.
She also leaves nine grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
