Alpha Miller Brittain, Methodist missionary
Alpha Miller Brittain, a retired Methodist missionary who spent more than 30 years in Africa, died April 15 at Scarlet Oaks in Clifton. She was 102.
Mrs. Brittain felt called to be a missionary in Africa as a young woman and prepared for that ministry by attending Asbury College, Wilmore, Ky. She began her missionary life in the mid-1920s in Angola, Portuguese West Africa.
On her first furlough, in the early 1930s, she returned to Asbury Theological Seminary and received her bachelor's degree in May 1932. She returned to Angola in late 1932 where she served for 32 more years.
On her retirement in 1964, she returned to the United States and became a resident of Scarlet Oaks, serving as administrator of Lafayette Hall for several years.
It was at Scarlet Oaks that she met John Brittain, whom she married in 1966 at age 69. It was her first and only marriage. He died in 1975.
Mrs. Brittain leaves numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Private services were held. The Elden A. Good Funeral Home, Hyde Park, handled the arrangements.

Eugene Bowling, owned generator repair firm
Eugene R. Bowling spent a good portion of his life learning how to rebuild generators, alternators and starters.
And it wasn't just cars that Mr. Bowling could repair. He also fixed tractors, boats and just about anything that had a motor, said his wife of 50 years, Rose H. Carney Bowling.
"One of his clients told him, 'Treat people well and you will be a success.' He lived by that," Mrs. Bowling said.
Mr. Bowling, 71, of Fort Mitchell, Ky., died at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, Ky.
He was the retired owner of Bowling's Enterprises in Fort Wright, Ky., and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Mr. Bowling grew up in Independence and dreamed of owning his own business. He worked for a generator company in Covington after World War II and saved as he learned his craft.
He opened Bowling's Enterprises in the 1960s and his son, James M. Bowling of Fort Mitchell, is now running the business.
Besides his wife and son, Mr. Bowling is also survived by a daughter, Beverly A. Zurborg of Independence; a brother, James E. Bowling of Taylor Mill; and two grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial was today at Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial was in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Arrangements by Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Mass Monday for Richard B. Finan
Mass for Richard B. Finan, father of Ohio Senate President Richard H. Finan, will be 7:30 p.m. Monday at St. Saviour Church in Rossmoyne.
Mr. Finan, 95, of Blue Ash, died Wednesday at Hospice of Cincinnati.
A native of Covington, Mr. Finan worked a variety of jobs during his lifetime, including 23 years in the hardware department of the Sears store in Avondale, retiring in 1968.
Other survivors are a daughter, Mary Lou Cleary, of Colerain Township; seven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha.
