People associated with the Kentucky General Assembly remembered Walter E. "Gene" Armour as each session began - even when they didn't know his name.

"The Pipe is back," Armour himself would joke, about the large tobacco pipe that was a part of his identity.

Mr. Armour, 87, of Bromley, died Sunday in Highlands at the Fort Thomas Nursing Home.

Mr. Armour did hold one elective position, that of Bromley Police Court judge. He was also a former Bromley auxiliary police officer and a marshal for the Bromley Police Department.

A member of the Bromley Christian Church, Mr. Armour also was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Bromley Vets.

Charles Shear, sports enthusiast

Whether it was volunteering to coach a baseball team or helping to found the city's Kid Glove Games, Charles Shear was a giver. "That was what he was all about," said son Doug Shear, of Mount Washington . "He was always trying to take care of others . . . That was his thing."

Mr. Shear, who died Sunday at age 87, shared his passion for sports with his family and with his community. As a member of the varsity baseball team at the University of Cincinnati, Mr. Shear was able to enjoy athletics while at the same time getting a bachelor's degree and later a master's degree.

Combining his love for sports and his love of children, Mr. Shear served as the director of athletics for the Cincinnati Recreation Department and was one of five founders of the Kid Glove Game, a program that provides baseball equipment and an organized league for children.

For his work on the Kid Glove Game committee and the supervising Knothole Program, he was awarded the Fred Hutchinson Award, named after the former Reds manager who led Cincinnati to the World Series in 1961.

Mr. Shear, of East Walnut Hills, also spent 28 years managing the L.B. Harrison Club, a now-defunct nonprofit residence club for young men getting their start in Cincinnati.

Mr. Shear also served as a Lt. Commander in the Navy during World War II.

Even after a traffic accident took his left leg in 1979, Mr. Shear continued to help with Kid Glove Games and serve as director of Seven Hills Savings and Loan, formerly of Over-the- Rhine, for a total of 25 years.

He and his wife of 45 years traveled all over the world.

"We traveled as much as we could as long as we could," Betty Jean Shear said. They went all over Europe, to Scandinavia, the British Isles, Fiji, Tahiti, the Orient, Australia, New Zealand and Central America, she said.

Mr. Shear was also a devoted member of Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church, where he worked with youth sports teams during his 47 years there.

Mr. Shear is also survived by sons Patrick, of Mount Washington, and Thomas, of East Walnut Hills; and five grandchildren.
