Edward C. Keiser, worked for UC
Edward Charles Keiser, who had a 39-year academic career at the University of Cincinnati and was an avid home gardener, died Sunday. He was 65.
With a doctorate in education from UC, Dr. Keiser worked at the university in various roles from resident hall adviser to Dean of Men, Director of Veterans' Affairs, Director of Handicapped Students and most-recently Student Conduct Officer.
He was nationally known and respected for his enthusiastic leadership role in veterans' affairs, including four years as president of the National Association of Veterans' Upward Bound Program.
But around his Newport home, Dr. Keiser was best-known for his backyard garden - designed to be in bloom from spring's first crocuses through late fall. Terraced down a steep hillside, the garden contains fossil rocks hidden among the many flowers and plants.
"There were never enough hours in the day for Ed," said Virginia Keiser, his wife. "He always had so many projects going and always had so many things he wanted to complete."
Each Christmas, Dr. Keiser worked on a homemade wooden gift for each of his three children and eight stepchildren. One recent year, he used a band saw to make each one a wooden creche with characters that formed into a puzzle.
Dr. Keiser served with the Human Involvement Project of Cincinnati, was past-president of his neighborhood association and vice-chairman of the Newport Planning and Zoning Commission.
Dr. Keiser also was an active member and past-president of the Campbell County Kiwanis Club.
"Ed was committed to the city of Newport and the improvements that have been made to the city," said Jan Knepshield, a Newport city commissioner.
"He was always available to help in any way," Ms. Knepshield said.
Dr. Keiser also leaves a daughter, Mary Kay Crone; sons, E. Joseph Keiser and David J. Keiser; and eight stepchildren, Lori Brubaker, Melanie Brubaker, Larry Brubaker, Jeff Brubaker, Bret Brubaker, Brad Brubaker, Jed Brubaker and Rob Brubaker.
