Dorothy Mae Beckner, once owned cafe

Dorothy Mae Beckner owned three restaurants and a delicatessen in river city, Dayton, Ky., and battled back to restart her businesses after a series of floods and redevelopment.

"The people in the bottoms were hurt by the floods, but she was among those who kept battling back," said former Dayton Mayor Gil Lynn.

Mrs. Beckner, 57, of Dayton, died Sunday at her residence.

She was the former owner and operator of Kenton Cafe, Rich and Dottie's Cafe, Atlantic City Cafe and R & D's Deli. Mrs. Beckner and her husband, Rich Adams, had Rich & Dottie's Cafe at Fourth Avenue and Clay Street, for about 10 years, until Dayton Urban Renewal bought them out. "It worked out well for everyone. They took over another place, when the owner was wanting to get out of business," said Lynn.

Survivors also include three sons, Dennis Beckner and Lester Beckner, both of Dayton, and Timothy Beckner of Butler, Ky.; a daughter, Barbara Jobe of Ludlow; stepsons, Charles Adams and Joseph Adams, both of Powder Springs, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation: 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials: to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Ft. Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Reese Lloyd, spent half a century on river

Reese Lloyd, a riverboat captain for more than 50 years, died Monday. He was 88.

After earning licenses to navigate the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, the Fort Thomas resident started working as a captain for the Ohio River Co., then went to Union Barge Co., which later became Union Mechling. His tow boats hauled barges filled with everything from chocolate to livestock.

He was active at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Thomas and was a longtime member of the Cincinnati Propeller Club.

He leaves his wife, Daisy; daughter Carol Winkler of Fort Thomas; sisters, Jane Cantoni of Lebanon, Ohio, and Marjorie Liggett of Cincinnati; and three grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.

Kathleen Carrigan, respected nurse, teacher

Kathleen "Katie" Reinert Carrigan, for 30 years a registered nurse, died Sunday at the Jewish Hospital in Louisville. She was 51.

Mrs. Carrigan, of Colerain Township, spent most of her nursing career at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, where she was the 1969 Outstanding Graduate.

She was a graduate of Miami University, where she received the Nursing Department's Ruth Ann Busald Award for clinical care.

Mrs. Carrigan was a past president and board member of the Good Samaritan School of Nursing Alumni Association, a nursing instructor at the College of Mount St. Joseph, a past Girl Scout leader and past president of the McAuley High School's Mom and Dads Club.

She leaves her husband, John W. Carrigan; children, Casey and Meghan Carrigan; sisters, Marty Lamb, Helen Misner, and Ruth Reinert; and brothers Joe and Paul Reinert.

Mass: 10 a.m. Thursday at St. James Church, White Oak. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today at Mihovk-Rosenacker Funeral Home, Groesbeck. Memorials: Good Samaritan School of Nursing.
