Mary Brogan, wife of Lt. Gov.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Mary Brogan, the wife of Florida Lt. Gov. Frank Brogan, died Sunday of cancer. She was 44.

Mrs. Brogan, a former school teacher and administrator, died at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital two years after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Brogan had often called his wife "my partner in life." The two were childhood sweethearts in Cincinnati, where Mrs. Brogan was born. They married in 1976.

Mrs. Brogan earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in education from Florida Atlantic University. She began her career as a third-grade teacher at Port Salerno Elementary School in Stuart, Fla., and later worked as an assistant principal at both Port Salerno and Pinewood Elementary, in Florida.

Gov. Jeb Bush ordered that all flags be lowered in memory of Mrs. Brogan.

"We have lost a true friend, Frank has lost a true partner and the people of Florida have lost a true public servant with a big heart," the governor said.

After Brogan was elected education commissioner in 1994, the couple moved to Tallahassee, where Mrs. Brogan worked as an educational consultant at Florida State University.

Mrs. Brogan was diagnosed with cancer in March 1997. After a mastectomy, she learned the cancer had spread to her bones and underwent a bone marrow transplant.

Following intensive treatment, Mrs. Brogan was cancer-free for about a year. Late last year, however, it returned.

Mrs. Brogan has worked recently to promote breast cancer awareness. She led a women's 5K race to benefit breast cancer and made calls of support to breast cancer patients.

Frank Brogan's mother died of breast cancer in October 1996. Mary Brogan's mother also died of cancer at the age of 54.

Mary Brogan is survived by her husband and two sisters, Jane Leisring and Carol Stacey, both of Cincinnati.
