Kyle S. Hesselbrock, had Tay-Sachs
The Deerfield Township boy who inspired the "Mile for Kyle" walk, Kyle Spencer Hesselbrock, died Wednesday of Tay-Sachs disease. He was 2 years old.
Last fall, about 400 walkers participated in the first-ever walk during the Funfest in West Chester and raised $10,000 for the National Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases Association in Brookline, Mass., which provides public education and research for a cure. The congenital disease destroys the central nervous system.
"He's the only child with this in Cincinnati," said Kyle's mother, Suzanne Traub-Hesselbrock. "We found out after we joined the national organization. The last child in this area was about five years ago, and the child before that was 11 years ago."
"We would rather that people help us in our quest for research and a cure," she said. "Their money is best spent (on research) rather than flowers."
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Kyle Hesselbrock Fund, c/o Firstar Bank, 3310 W. U.S. Route 22, Loveland, Ohio 45140, to benefit the National Tay-Sachs & Allied Diseases Association.
Besides his parents, Kyle also is survived by his grandparents, Spencer and Alana Traub and Richard and Claudia Hesselbrock; and his great-grandparents, Ferol Traub and Rose Seals.
Visitation is 4 p.m. today at Craver-Riggs Funeral Home, 529 Main St., Milford. A memorial mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Community of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8815 East Kemper Road, Montgomery, Ohio.
