Rev. Frank Frey, escaped Nazis and Soviet prison for America
Rev. Frank Frey, 80, a Franciscan friar who escaped Nazi persecution in Hungary and then imprisonment in Siberia following World War II, died Monday.
Born in Hungary, Father Frey studied for the priesthood in Budapest and was ordained a Franciscan priest in 1943.
During World War II, he was one of 40 priests enlisted by Cardinal Josef Mindzenty to travel from town to town in Hungary, spreading hope to those living under Nazi and Communist oppression.
Both of his brothers were killed in Stalingrad during the war and his mother was murdered by Russian troops looting Hungary in 1949.
Perceived as a threat to the Communists in power, he was arrested and imprisoned in 1946. Two years later, at his trial, he was sentenced to 16 years of hard labor in the lead mines of Siberia.
He escaped the prison - a dungeon 200 feet underground housing 5,000 inmates - with the help of friends and made his way to Austria, sheltered along the way by many people who risked their lives to help him.
When Father Frey arrived in the United States in 1950, he joined the Franciscans in the Province of St. John the Baptist, based in Cincinnati, and later became a U.S. citizen.
Because he spoke six languages fluently, he was able to help many Cincinnati area refugees.
Over the next 39 years he served as a hospital chaplain, associate pastor and pastor in Louisville, Ky., Hamilton, Ohio, Kansas City, Mo., Kansas City, Kan., Portales, N.M., Fort Wayne, Ind., Lafayette, Ind., Minonk, Ill., and Metamora, Ill.
In 1987, he suffered a stroke that left him unable to speak or write. Despite his disability and retirement at St. Clement Friary in St. Bernard, he volunteered in the bookstore at Roger Bacon High School.
Father Frey had no relatives in the United States.

James Casey, businessman and musician
James B. Casey, 71, a long-time Cincinnati business executive and avid amateur jazz musician, died Thursday at his East Walnut Hills home.
Although Mr. Casey led several area companies during his career, he was perhaps best-known for his volunteer efforts as a musician who performed at more than 1,000 events. He was the inspiration behind "Jim Casey and Friends," a loose-knit collection of jazz musicians who for 42 years entertained at various programs benefiting non-profit organizations.
"Jim was always happiest with music and friends in the room," said Mr. Casey's wife, Ann. "He left the front door open all the time for friends, and our home was a gathering place not just during the holidays, but all year 'round. Even in Connecticut during summers, Jim had the piano tuned before unpacking his bags."
The native of Mohawk, N.Y., moved to Cincinnati in 1954 to join the Procter & Gamble Co. after graduating from Cornell University with a master's degree in civil engineering.
Soon after arriving in Cincinnati, he received a leave of absence from P&G to serve with the U.S. Army in Korea. He was a first lieutenant and an artillery forward observer.
He returned to P&G, where he helped develop and install the first computer system used by the company. Mr. Casey later served in executive management positions for Pollack Steel (now AK Steel), Palm Beach Co., Witt Industries and Nutrition Technology Corp.
In 1985, Mr. Casey acquired an office supply company, Eastern-Casey. He remained active in the company until recently, when cancer forced him to be hospitalized.
Mr. Casey was a member of the first board of trustees of the Seven Hills School, where all four of his children attended. He was active in the Dan Beard Boy Scout Council, serving as vice president, and he helped develop the Hyde Park Teen Board.
He was a member of the Ohio Society of Colonial Wars, Hyde Park Community Church and Cincinnati Country Club, where he often played squash and tennis.
He also leaves daughters, Robin Wood of Richmond, Va., Becky Casey of Los Angeles, Dawson Bullock of Louisville, Ky., and Eliza Prall of Denver; sisters, Margaret Hess of Mohawk, N.Y., and Elaine Stephens of Swampscott, Mass.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Norman Chapel, Spring Grove Cemetery. Arrangements: Elden A. Good Funeral Home. Memorials: Cornell University or charity of choice.
