Rev. Robert Schmidt, of Xavier University

The Rev. Robert W. Schmidt, S.J., professor emeritus of philosophy at Xavier University, died Thursday. He was 90 years old.

The native Cincinnatian began teaching philosophy at Xavier in 1964 and served as chairman of the department from 1967-74. In 1980, he was named professor emeritus and continued to serve Xavier in community relations.

Father Schmidt moved to the Colombiere Center for senior Jesuits in Clarkston, Mich., in December 1997. A wake will be held there today.

The Xavier High School graduate attended Xavier University for two years before joining the Society of Jesus in 1929. He went on to earn his bachelor's degree in Latin in 1932 and his master's degree in Latin in 1934, both from Xavier. He earned his doctorate in philosophy in 1947 from the University of Toronto and was ordained in 1942.

Before returning to Cincinnati, Father Schmidt taught at West Baden College in Indiana.

He served several civic and charitable organizations, including Victory Neighborhood Services agency, Walnut Hills Area Council and Jobs for People.

He leaves brothers Thomas J. Schmidt and Dr. Richard T.F. Schmidt; and a sister, Betty Schoettinger, all of Cincinnati. He was preceded in death by brothers William J. Schmidt, S.J., also a member of the Jesuit order, and Ted Schmidt.

Mass: 7:30 p.m. Monday at XU's Bellarmine Chapel, preceded by visitation at 6:30 p.m.

AGNES R. FREY, 86, of Cincinnati, formerly of Rising Sun, Ind., died Thursday. Ms. Frey was a homemaker. Services: noon EDT Monday at Shiloh Baptist Church, Rising Sun, Ind. JAMES ROGER DWELLY, 64, of Bethel, Ohio, died Thursday. The decorated Army veteran was a retired bio-medical engineer for Fort Hamilton-Hughes Hospital. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Kennedy-Stevens Funeral Home, Bethel. Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials: American Heart Association.

J. Harold Connley Sr., undertaker

In Sanfordtown, Ky., undertaker J. Harold Connley Sr. and another man waded through chest-high water, carrying a body on their shoulders to move it from a flooded home.

In Mount Vernon, Ky., Mr. Connley led a funeral procession through a railroad tunnel to get to an isolated cemetery.

"We were hoping a train wouldn't come along," said Mr. Connley at the time.

One of the oldest funeral directors in the state, Harold Connley, 88, had a lifetime of stories tied to his chosen profession. He died Friday night at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

When he entered the business during the Depression years, he was looking for a job with steady prospects and had a friend who was a funeral director.

After learning his craft, he decided to strike out on his own. He remodeled his father's house in Covington and opened Connley's Funeral Home in 1939. The name changed to Connley Brothers Funeral Home when Connley's brother Jack joined him.

In addition to his wife and sister-in-law, Mr. Connley leaves his son, Jim Connley of Crestview Hills; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. A daughter, Nancy Connley Deering, died in 1996.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

William J. Gentry, softball player

Talented softball player William J. Gentry and his team qualified to play in the world softball tournament in Minnesota, and he played at two key positions - shortstop and pitcher.

Mr. Gentry, of Erlanger, often played softball in Northern Kentucky five to seven nights a week, and wound up in the world tournament in 1987.

Mr. Gentry, 46, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood after a two- year battle with cancer.

He believed that life is too short not to enjoy every minute of it, so he spent most of his spare time with his family and playing softball.

"His big thing was he just wanted everybody to be happy and get along," said his wife, Laura Nortrand Gentry.

He worked for 16 years as a maintenance technician for the Erlanger-Elsmere School Board, serving as an electrician, plumber and inspector at the various schools. He also was a long-time volunteer for the Erlanger Fire Department.

Other survivors include his daughters, Stacye Gentry, Amanda Gentry and Nancy Gentry, all of Erlanger; his father, John L. Gentry; his mother and stepfather, Joyce and Edwin Scudder of Ludlow; sisters, Bonnie G. Cole of California, Nancy Moore of West Harrison, Ind., and Tammy Russell of Ludlow; brothers, Thomas Gentry of Newport and Edwin Scudder Jr. of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.

Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Memorials: to the Bill Gentry Girls' Athletic Scholarship Fund, in care of the Erlanger-Elsmere Board of Education, 500 Graves Ave., Erlanger, Ky. 41018.

Margaret Schmitz, devoted mother, clerk

Margaret R. Schmitz, a long-time worker in the Campbell County Circuit Clerk's office, died Monday at Wesley Hall in Cincinnati. She was 74.

At the clerk's office, Mrs. Schmitz's job focused on gathering vital statistics.

Mrs. Schmitz, formerly of Newport, had lived at Wesley Hall, a nursing home in Riverside.

"When all of us kids were in high school, she was like everybody's mom," said a daughter, Nancy Zumwalde of Cincinnati. Other survivors include daughters, Donna Browning of Walton, Ky., and Jackie Clark of Newport; sons, Tom Schmitz of Newport and Jim Schmitz of  Taylor Mill; a sister, Jean Moore of Highland Heights; 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Stephen Church, Newport. Visitation: from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport.

James Woods, former Kroger executive

James W. Woods, 75, a former Kroger Co. director, died Tuesday in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

The native Cincinnatian was a warehouse and distribution consultant to the grocery industry, operating Jim  Woods and Associates in Bloomfield Hills from 1974-92. He was the director of distribution at Kroger from 1948-67 and senior vice president of Allied Supermarkets from 1967-74.

He was active in the Elder High School Alumni Association and was a Xavier University graduate who also studied at Stanford University. Mr.  Woods was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II.

He leaves his wife, Dolores M. Woods; daughters, Jennifer Neiiendam of Canton, Mich., Cynthia Schneider of Seminole, Fla., and Diane Piscopink of Troy, Mich.; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Arrangements are through William R. Hamilton Co., Birmingham, Mich.
