Laurie McCloy, courage marked cancer fight
Laurie McCloy, 46, of West Chester, was a strong and determined woman.
Mrs. McCloy was diagnosed and treated for cancer five years ago. Two years later, though, the cancer came back and spread.
She died Sunday at Hospice of Cincinnati from a recurrence of breast cancer.
"But my mother never gave up, and she never complained," said her daughter, Erin McCloy, 20.
"She was very involved with Bosom Buddies (a breast cancer support group). They were a support system for each other, wonderful and very determined women, like my mother."
Mrs. McCloy collected crystals and geodes, which she used, along with other materials, to make jewelry. She and a partner sold the jewelry through a small business called Natural Avenues.
She also worked as a volunteer for the Hamilton County Park District, involved in projects from feeding birds to counting butterflies, her daughter recalled.
"She was a good friend to people and to all of God's creatures," said Kathy Hinger, a friend.
Mrs. McCloy devoted much time to her children's activities. She was an active member of the Lakota Band Boosters and worked for the Lakota School District levy. She was a Girl Scout leader for several years.

Shirley H. Bryant, medical scientist
Shirley H. Bryant, 74, a University of Cincinnati researcher and professor of cell biophysics and pharmacology for 44 years, died July 20.
The Hyde Park resident was pioneer in causes and treatments in hereditary muscle disorders, his career spanned nearly half a century.
"Shirley was a scholar's scholar," recalled Earl Wallick, UC pharmacology professor. "His depth of understanding on just about any subject from jazz to biophysics was extraordinary."
In the medical community, he is perhaps best-known for discovering the cause of myotonia congenita, a hereditary muscular dystrophy characterized by a failure of voluntary muscles to relax.
He also made significant contributions to the use of the drug dantrolene in relieving potentially fatal symptoms of malignant hyperthermia, a genetic muscle disorder, triggered by the use of general anesthesia. The mortality rate for malignant hyperthermia has been cut from 80 percent to 5 percent since Bryant's discovery.
The Pittsfield, Mass., native moved to Cincinnati in 1955. A 1948 Aurora University graduate with a bachelor's degree in biology and physics, Dr. Bryant won an Atomic Energy Commission Fellowship to study biophysics at the University of Chicago, where he earned a doctorate in 1954.

'Johnny Dollar' Wooten, musician
Self-taught musician John "Johnny Dollar" Wooten, who played with famed musicians Bootsy Collins and James Brown, was found dead Sunday at his home in Mount Auburn. He was 54.
The Hamilton County Coroner's office is investigating the possibility that his death was heat-related, but officials said he also had heart disease. An official cause of death won't be available for about two weeks when toxicology tests are completed.
Mr. Wooten was organist for New Emmanuel Baptist Church. His sister, Alberta McKenzie, said her brother was found Sunday on his front porch by church members who became worried when he didn't arrive at church.
"He played piano and organ and was a great singer," she said. "He used to play in all the bands around the city. He never stopped. ... He'd have everybody dancing.
"I will remember how loved he really was and how anybody he met, they loved him," his sister said.
Mr. Wooten taught himself how to play piano, she said, beginning at the age of 10. He was a graduate of North College Hill High School.
Mr. Wooten is also survived by a son, John Troy Wooten, sisters Rosemary Darby, Grace Evans, Laura Crawford; and a brother, Jonathan Wooten.
Visitation is today, 6 to 7 p.m. at New Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2316 Florence Ave. Funeral service: 7 p.m. at the church.
Jamison & Jamison Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
