Charles Castle Jr., helped Special Olympics

Charles F. "Chuck" Castle Jr., 56, an organizer for the Special Olympics, died Monday.

Mr. Castle helped line up training partners for mentally handicapped people who wanted to compete, said a daughter, Karen Castle.

"The Special Olympics impacted his life and our lives," she said.

The Erlanger, Ky., resident was the management information services director for Pomeroy Computer Resources.

He also leaves his wife, Janice; other daughters, Kim Castle, Cindy Castle and Elizabeth Castle; a son, Chip Castle; parents, Marguerite and Charles F. Castle Sr.; brother, Dennis Castle; and sisters, Brenda Castle and Cheryl Dundee.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at the family residence, 665 Mimosa Court, Erlanger. Arrangements: Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.

David DeVore Jr., executive and volunteer

David G. DeVore Jr., 87, of East Walnut Hills, a retired Drackett Co. executive, died Tuesday.

The Withrow High School graduate received a

business degree in 1935 from the University of Cincinnati, where he had been president of his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi.

Upon graduation, Mr. DeVore went to work for Drackett. During his 30 years there, he was vice president of sales and retired in 1966 as vice president of marketing.

He served on the boards of Community Chest, Seven Hills Neighborhood Association and the Protestant Orphan's Home, now Beech Acres. He also was a vesting member and senior warden at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church.

Mr. DeVore was a longtime member of the University Club of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Country Club.

He leaves his wife, Esther; daughter, Melissa Johnsen of Denver; son, David G. DeVore III; brother, Leonard DeVore of San Diego; and three grandchildren.

Visitation: 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ Church Cathedral's Centennial Chapel, followed by services at 11 a.m. Memorials: Hospice of Cincinnati or Alzheimer's Association.

Martha Weaver, P&G bookkeeper

Martha Fields Weaver, a retired bookkeeper for Procter & Gamble and a devoted mother, wife and friend, died at 6:02 p.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington.

She was 78.

She balanced the books for P&G's food service and cafeteria

departments for about 27 years before retiring in 1985. Before that, she also kept the books for various cafeterias and food service establishments in Northern Kentucky.

Educated at Holmes High School in Covington, Mrs. Weaver went on to business school in Cincinnati, said a son, Gene Weaver of Fort Wright.

"She was very kind, very caring, very compassionate," her son said. "She wasn't a big talker, but she took in everything. She was very interesting and interested in others."

Mrs. Weaver was born in the Falmouth area. Around the age of 13, she moved to Covington to be raised by an aunt and uncle after the death of her mother.

In 1943, she married Paul E. Weaver and had two children. Her husband died shortly after her retirement in 1985.

After retiring, Mrs. Weaver enjoyed visiting with her sisters, going to church and shopping, her son said. She also enjoyed needlepoint, quilting and making crafts.

She was a member of Erlanger Christian Church.

"She was a great mother and friend," Gene Weaver said. "She was just always concerned for others, and she was there whenever you needed her."

Other survivors include a daughter, Diana Leinart of  Taylor Mill; sisters, Virgiline House of  Taylor Mill and Erma Smith and Faye Schrand, both of Erlanger; and one grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home,  Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to Kenton County Boys and Girls Club, 30 W. 26th St., Covington, Ky. 41014; or American Lung Association, 1113 Kenwood Road, Blue Ash, Ohio 45242.

Fritz Manczyk, longtime cellist with CSO

Fritz Manczyk, who spent 44 years as a cellist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, died Wednesday. He was 82.

Mr. Manczyk was born in Berlin, Germany. He studied there and in Barcelona, Spain, before coming to the United States to study with Walter Heermann at what is now the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in music.

"What he passed on was the love of classical music to his children and grandchildren," said his son, Peter F. Manczyk. "Music was a very important part of his life."

His composition, "Variations on a Sarabande by Bach," was performed by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in 1957. His other works included a cello sonata; a piece for woodwind quintet; the "Dolldream Suite," performed by the Cincinnati Civic Orchestra and the Dayton Philharmonic; and "Eulogy," which was performed by the Xavier University Chamber Ensemble.

His wife, Grace, preceded him in death.

Other survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth M. Mastriani; and two grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Vivian Church, Finneytown. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Nurre Brothers Funeral Home, 6050 Montgomery Road. Memorials are suggested to Gift of Music, c/o Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, 1241 Elm St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45210.
