Rev. Jerome Lewis, 'kindest teacher'

Long before civil rights and integration swept across the United States, the Rev. Jerome M. Lewis Sr. believed strongly that if black and white people would just sit down and talk to one another all their problems would be solved.

The minister felt so strongly that the races could love one another that he insisted, in the 1940s and 1950s, that his children attend St. Simon's Episcopal School so they could be with white children.

Rev. Lewis and his wife also adopted three bi-racial children from an orphanage "at a time when no one else, white or black, wanted them," said his son, Jerome M. Lewis Jr.

Although he never marched in a civil rights demonstration, he lived integration everyday, his family said.

Rev. Lewis, 83, the pastor of Greater Liberty Baptist Church in Madisonville for 38 years, died Tuesday in Virginia Beach, Va., where he lived with Jerome Jr.

"He was probably the kindest teacher in Cincinnati. He was a praying man. If Daddy were here, he would say, 'Don't forget to pray,' " his son said. "He was a heck of a role model. I loved this man."

Born in Eastman, Ga., Rev. Lewis was born to a brick mason's helper and a cleaning woman. When he was still an infant, his family moved to Hamilton, Ohio, where he graduated from the integrated Hamilton High School. In 1939, he and his new wife moved to Cincinnati.

He served as a U.S. Army cook in Japan in World War II and in 1951, he graduated summa cum laude from God's Bible School. He worked as a railroad postal clerk for the U.S. Post Office in the West End for 22 years. He then worked as an orderly at Jewish Hospital.

He also served as a minister at Baptist churches in Lincoln Heights and Falmouth, Ky. He retired in 1995.

When he was diagnosed with cancer, he and his wife moved in with his son, first in Louisville and then in Virginia Beach.

In addition to his son, Rev. Lewis leaves his wife of 60 years, Edna McGinnis Lewis; two daughters, Sandra Sparrow of Rouwue Bluffs, Maine, and Monica L. Sanders of Cincinnati; two other sons, Peter Kevin Lewis of Columbus, Ohio, and Rob Lewis of Las Vegas; four sisters, Jean Kimmons of Connecticut, Helen Thelma Sykes Smith, Molly Patricia Smith and Lucille Worthy, all of Illinois; three brothers, Albert Lewis and Windsor Lewis of Ohio, and Wilbur Sykes of Illinois; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services are at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Spring Grove Cemetery. Visitation is 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Renfro Funeral Service, 647 Forest Ave.
