Dorothy Rogers Gaier, reporter, columnist

Dorothy Rogers Gaier, a former reporter and columnist for the Columbus ( Ohio) Dispatch, was considered a woman ahead of her time.

A graduate of the University of Louisville, Mrs. Gaier had several careers, including public relations and sales promotion for Shaw-Barton in Coschocton, Ohio, and Standard Publishing in Cincinnati.

She also was public relations director for Cincinnati Community Chest, which is now United Way. During the 1960s, she wrote public relations articles for the Forest Hills School District during their levy campaigns.

She founded and operated, with her late husband William B. Gaier, Ad-Specialties Inc., an advertising specialities firm.

Mrs. Gaier, 90, formerly of Anderson Township, died Tuesday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport, Ky.

She was a member of the Women's Committee of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Contemporary Arts Center, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Women's City Club and also had been active in the Anderson Hill Women's Club, the Cincinnati League of Women Voters and a parenting group, Belles & Beaux.

Mrs. Gaier leaves a son, Thomas M. Gaier; a sister, Marjorie L. Rogers; a close friend, Betty Underwood, and one grandchild, Michael J. Gaier.

Mass of Christian Burial at noon today at St. John Fisher Church, Newtown. Visitation from 10 a.m. until noon today at the church. Memorials to Sr. Mary Lawrence Scholarship Fund, c/o St. Ursula Villa School Development Office, 3660 Vineyard Place, Cincinnati, 45226, or Anderson Township Firemen's Association, 6211 Salem Road, Cincinnati, 45230.

William Schildman, photographer

William F. Schildman Jr., a veteran photographer whose photos appeared as Cincinnati phone book covers and on a Wheaties Box, died Thursday at age 78. Schildman, of Springfield Township, died of cancer.

After a career in sales and residential building, the Northside native turned his sights on photography. His wife, Betty, assisted him in his work.

During the 1970s and 1980s, he enjoyed photographing members of the "Big Red Machine" - the Cincinnati Reds team that won two World Series. His photographs "Last Pitch at Crosley Field-First Pitch at Riverfront Stadium" remains popular today.

Mr. Schildman also shot several photos that appeared on Cincinnati phone book covers and shot a photo of former Red Johnny Bench that appeared as a Wheaties Box photograph.

He was a World War II veteran who served in Italy and Northern Africa in the U.S. Army Engineer Corps.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Linda Schildman of Cincinnati; a son, Bill Schildman, also of Cincinnati; and a brother, Robert Schildman of Hillsboro, Ohio.

Services were today at Charles A. Miller Sons Funeral Home, Northside. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cincinnati, 4310 Cooper Road, Cincinnati 45242.

James W. Isaacs, shared gifts with others

James W. Isaacs worked hard all of his life but believed in sharing the gifts and talents he had accumulated.

Mr. Isaacs, a retired die setter at a Cincinnati manufacturing firm, was a regular contributor to the Norwood Food Closet that helps hungry people.

He also played guitar and sang gospel songs to residents of Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence and the Dupree Nursing Facility in Cincinnati, where he volunteered.

"My dad cared a lot about people and did what he could to help them," said a daughter, Darla Isaacs of Plainsboro, N.J. "When you met him, he was friendly and outgoing. Everyone seemed to like my dad."

Mr. Isaacs, 79, of Erlanger, Ky., died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, Ky.

He was a laborer and a member of Cameron Avenue Church of God in Norwood, Ohio.

Mr. Isaacs spent most of his life in Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati and had many friends, his daughter said.

Mr. Isaacs is also survived by his wife, Viola Isaacs; sons: the Rev. Vernon "Gene" Isaacs of Norwood, James W. Isaacs of Springboro, and Ronald Isaacs of Independence; brothers: Amos Isaacs of Dell City, Okla., Charley Isaacs of  Oklahoma City, Okla., and Herbert Isaacs of Dry Ridge; sisters: Minnie Waldorff of Cincinnati, Myrtle Rice of Florence and Susan Malicote of Sandgap, Ky.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation: 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Entombment: Forest Lawn Cemetery Mausoleum, Erlanger.

Dr. Robert P. Koenig, diabetes. expert, UC prof, family physician
Dr. Robert Patrick Koenig, a family physician for more than three decades, died Monday at his home in Clifton. He was 72.

"Dad was a classic family physician who was dedicated to his patients. He frequently made house calls, often in the middle of the night," said his eldest son, Peter E. Koenig.

He became an expert on clinical diabetes. and was an adjunct professor on the subject at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

He served as medical director of the Cincinnati Financial Corp. and its predecessor, the Inter-Ocean Insurance Co., from 1961 to 1992.

He was doctor for the Roger Bacon High School football team from 1956 to 1978. A Roger Bacon alumnus, Dr. Koenig was inducted into the Roger Bacon Hall of Fame in 1978.

This past January, he was honored by the Ohio State Medical Association and the Ohio High School Athletic Association for his long and distinguished service to high school student athletes.

Dr. Koenig enlisted in the U.S. Navy right after graduation from high school in 1945. He served stateside until 1946.

After earning bachelor's and medical degrees from the University of Cincinnati, and completing a residency, he re-enlisted in the Navy, was commissioned as an officer and served as the medical officer on the USS Iowa, a battleship, during the Korean War.

During his career, he was on the staffs of the old St. Francis Hospital, and at Deaconess, Christ, Bethesda and Emerson North Psychiatric hospitals.

He was a member of the Cincinnati Academy of Medicine, the Cincinnati Diabetes. Association where he was a former president, and the Cincinnati Rheumatism Society.

In addition to his son, Dr. Koenig leaves his wife of 44 years, Mary Theresa Kelly Koenig; three other sons: Phillip M., Dennis S. and John J.; a daughter, Kelly M. Windholtz; two brothers: George Koenig and Thomas Koenig; two sisters: Merle Ann Koenig and Carolyn Honkomp, and eight grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Annunciation Church, 3547 Clifton Ave. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today at Busse-Borgmann Funeral Home, 3464 Clifton Ave.

John Taylor, sang in church choir
John  Taylor Jr., 51, of Forest Park, died last Saturday during heart transplant surgery at University Hospital. He had been a patient since last October, awaiting a donor heart.

A memorial service is set for 11:30 a.m. this Saturday at Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Avondale, where Mr.  Taylor sang in the choir.

A Cincinnati native, Mr.  Taylor graduated from Princeton High School. He previously worked as an overhead sprinkler fitter. Mr.  Taylor is survived by his parents, Mary and John Taylor; a sister, Terri Taylor; his wife, Audrey Taylor, and five children. Arrangements: Jamison & Jamison Funeral Home.

Francis X. Paulin Sr., retired watchmaker

Francis X. Paulin Sr., 82, of Mount Washington, a retired watchmaker for E&J Swigart Co., died Wednesday.

Mr. Paulin served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. An avid golfer and bridge player, he was a member of Guardian Angels parish and volunteered to work at parish bingo games for many years. He also was active in the McNicholas High School boosters club.

Mr. Paulin placed a high priority on education and all seven of his children are college graduates.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mary; three daughters: Renee Deis, Claire Hughes and Mary Paulin; four sons: Francis X. Jr., Joseph, James and William; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the T.P. White & Sons Funeral Home, 2050 Beechmont Ave. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Guardian Angels Church, 6531 Beechmont Ave.
