Ida Schmidt, anatomy professor and pioneer in drug therapy at UC

Ida G. Schmidt combined a 30-year career teaching anatomy at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine with pioneering work in drug therapy for malaria and tuberculosis.

Then Ms. Schimdt "retired" to California but soon began a new career. She would teach at two more colleges - one a veterinary school and the other a medical school - before retiring for good.

She died Sunday at Llanfair Retirement Center in College Hill, where she lived since 1993. She was 96.

The oldest of eight children born to a non-English speaking German immigrants in New Jersey, Ms. Schmidt went to work at age 12 as a live-in domestic. A supportive high school English teacher noticed her abilities and arranged for Ms. Schmidt to attend Mount Holyoke, which was at that time a teacher's college, in Massachusetts. She earned an undergraduate degree there, then a master's degree in zoology from the University of Wisconsin and a doctorate from Washington University in St. Louis.

Research at Children's Hospital brought her to Cincinnati in 1929 where, a year later, she began a 30-year career teaching anatomy at UC's Medical College. She taught hundreds of doctors practicing in the Cincinnati area.

While there, she and husband Leon Schmidt worked on a project that developed drug therapies for malaria and tuberculosis, turning UC's Medical School into an international magnet for doctors interested in their work.

She also edited an illustrated atlas of human microscopic anatomy that is viewed as a standard text for medical students worldwide.

In 1963, she and her husband "retired" to move to California. When she realized there was no college near her, Ms. Schmidt, then in her 60s, taught herself veterinary anatomy and began teaching at a veterinary college.

They moved to Birmingham, Ala., in 1969 where she joined the University of Alabama's medical college faculty. After she turned 80, she retired.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Schmidt of Bloomington, Ind.; and a son, Richard Schmidt of San Luis Obispo, Calif. No funeral services or visitation. Arrangements by Neidhard-Hensley Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Oct. 21 at the chapel of Llanfair Retirement Center.
