Melissa Lanier gave of herself

Melissa Lanier shared her mother's proverb: "He who gives quickly gives twice."

Her father, Jack Emery, was once called Cincinnati's "biggest taxpayer," because he developed downtown's signature buildings, including the Carew Tower, and then gave generously from his profits.

The headmistress at the Foxcroft School told her and generations of privileged young females that it was their "God-given duty to serve" fellow humans. She was one of those girls and she never forgot that advice.

She went on to donate decades of her life and untold sums to local charities whose missions she applauded.

"I hesitate to say that I can build bridges, but I think I can touch hands," she once said.

Ms. Lanier, 66, a mother of four, a grandmother of 10 and a resident of Hyde Park, died Wednesday of ovarian cancer.

Ms. Lanier was not a by-the-book philanthropist. She was a from-the-heart one.

"They broke the mold when they made her, they sure did," said Ms. Lanier's daughter, Melissa Murphy.

"She put everybody else first," her daughter said.

Ms. Lanier was selected by the Greater Cincinnati Foundation as the 1998 recipient of the Jacob E. Davis Volunteer Leadership Award, the foundation's highest honor for those who give lavishly of themselves.

"She was an incredible friend to us," said Sue Kathman, director of the non-profit organization Healing Connections, which trains welfare mothers to become health aides to elderly patients in their homes.

Ms. Kathman said Ms. Lanier, in her enthusiasm and accessibility, reminded her of Catherine McAuley, the founder of the Sisters of Mercy, who also came from a background of means, but used her position and inheritance to open a refuge for the poor.

"She (Ms. Lanier) was from a moneyed family, had all the connections, but she was an everyday, regular woman," she said. "She was very comfortable walking in all the circles and using that to build bridges for others." Ms. Lanier was a descendent of families who helped expand and shape Cincinnati. Her great-aunt Mary Emery was the founder of Mariemont, a planned community built in the '20s. Her father, John J. "Jack" Emery, was a successful industrialist, real estate developer and committed community servant.

The Emerys made significant gifts to the Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and the Charter Party. Their family estate, Peterloon, was turned into a foundation and this Georgian mansion on Hopewell Road in Indian Hill is now the scene of a number of public events.

But Ms. Lanier spoke little of the things which set her prestigious family apart. Instead, she advocated things that unite people across class, race and religious lines.

"I truly believe that we are brothers and sisters," she said last year. "I really don't see separation among us. That's not to say I love all my brothers, but I know we are all brothers." She had a particular interest in inter-faith endeavors and dialogue. One such program is housed at Old St. George, the former Catholic parish in Corryville that was closed about a decade ago and seemed doomed to destruction.

Instead it was saved by a non-profit board, renovated and turned into "a great good place" for spiritual renewal, arts events and ecumenical functions. Ms. Lanier, a lifelong Episcopalian, loved to bring friends of any religious background for a tour.

"There's a peace and serenity here, which everyone senses who comes in," she said. "It's an extraordinary place." Three years ago, on the eve of major surgery, she went to her first board meeting at Old St. George and was captivated by the mix of people sitting around one table, scheming for a common goal. "She was a tower of strength for us," said the Rev. David Lowry, the center's director.

In addition to her daughter, survivors include her husband, Addison, sons Addison II, Mark and John, and 11 grandchildren.

"She was an incredible person who gave to everyone around her, especially her grandchildren," said her daughter. "They were the light of her eye. They were 'it."'

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Christ Church in downtown Cincinnati. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Schaefer & Busby Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Healing Connections or Hebrew Union College.

Milford Hater, owned dry goods shop

Milford J. Hater, the father of seven and owner of Hater Bros.' Dry Goods for 55 years, died Tuesday. He was 81.

Mr. Hater, of Green Township, was a devoted family man and loved to throw parties at his house for relatives.

"His family meant more to him than anything else," said Mr. Hater's wife, Marie Monnig Hater. He had a bowling alley, pool table and arcade games in the basement for his children. "His family was his whole life."

Mr. Hater had four sisters and four brothers and 38 nieces and nephews - many of whom lived in the Cincinnati area - and threw get-togethers for everyone about once a month.

"He was constantly getting everyone together," said his daughter, Judy Hess of Columbus, Ohio. "He always said his heart was like a hotel room for everybody."

Mr. Hater was well known for his Price Hill variety store, which carried everything from shades to linoleum to food.

"He had people who would come down from Cleveland to shop at his store because he brought in seconds of children's clothing," Ms. Hess said.

Ralph Crosthwaite, '50s baseball star

Ralph Crosthwaite spent 30 years as a probation officer for Hamilton County Juvenile Court, but he distinguished himself earlier in life as a baseball player for Western Kentucky University.

Mr. Crosthwaite was inducted into the WKU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995 for his role as a rebounding and scoring leader in the late 1950s.

Mr. Crosthwaite died Thursday at age 64.

A native of Cincinnati, he graduated from Western Hills High School in 1954. He enrolled at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Ky., and almost immediately made his presence felt on the baseball court. He became the Hilltoppers' leading scorer and rebounder as a freshman, posting averages of 16.8 points per game and 10.9 rebounds per game, and led them to an 18-10 record and the Ohio Valley Conference championship.

As a junior and senior, he was the team's leading rebounder and scorer from 1957 to 1959, years he also led the nation in field goal accuracy.

An All-American center, Mr. Crosthwaite remained WKU's top rebounder and second-leading scorer for many years. He was 6 feet, 9 inches tall.

"He was very modest about it. He did not talk about it at all," daughter Susan Schumacher said of his baseball career. "I didn't learn about it until I was much older."

Upon graduation, he was drafted by the Detroit Pistons and played for the Boston Celtics.

But he left professional baseball, and returned to western Cincinnati. In 1961, he began his career as a probation officer, a position he held until his retirement in 1991. He most recently lived in Cumberland, Ky.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Marie Crosthwaite; three daughters, Julia Wendt, Susan Schumacher and Shannon Crosthwaite; and 16 grandchildren.
