Edwin P. Berger, Indiana farmer
Edwin P. Berger, a retired farmer and owner of Berger's Water Service, died Wednesday in Lawrenceburg, Ind. He was 79.
Mr. Berger, of Sunman, Ind., enjoyed music and loved to gather his large family for get-togethers that sometime numbered 40 people. He and his wife, Dorothy Riehle Berger, who survives him, had four daughters and four sons. They also have 25 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Berger is preceded in death by another great-grandchild, Austin.
"Every kid was kind of unique to him," said his son, Chuck, of Milan, Ind. "He had little nicknames for each individual one."
In addition to farming and hauling water as Berger's Water Service, Mr. Berger was also a school bus driver for 22 years.
When his own children were younger, Mr. Berger was in a country west ern band, called the Melody Pioneers. "He loved to - as he called it - make music," his son said.
And every Saturday night he would call the square dances held at the local American Legion Post.
"He called the square dances and I'd grab a partner and dance," Mrs. Berger said. The two, whose favorite song was "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You," were married for more than 53 years.
An Army Air Force veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Sunman American Legion Post and the VFW of Batesville.
Mr. Berger was a former precinct committeeman and longtime Franklin Township Board member. He was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society.
Mr. Berger also is survived by his daughters Norma Newton and Mary Sapp, of Milan, Ind., Pauline Rodmak er, of Georgetown, Ind., and Linda Jackson, of Sunman; sons Jim and John Berger, both of Milan, and Danny Berger, of Indianapolis.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Nicholas Church, 6461 East St. Nicholas Drive, Sunman. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today at Cook Funeral Home, 107 Vine St., Sunman, with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m.

Dennis R. Meeker, 49, teacher and trustee
Dennis R. Meeker, a high school teacher and township trustee, died Thursday after battling colon cancer for nearly three years. He was 49.
Mr. Meeker, who lived in Mount Orab, Ohio, would have retired this year after a 30-year career at Western Brown High School as a bus driver and teacher.
He taught Occupational Work Experience (OWE), a work-study program, teaching in the morning and visiting students on their jobs in the afternoon, as well as driving a school bus.
"He developed OWE at Western Brown, made it into a good program," said Principal Ray Wisby. "He helped direct some of the kids who might not have been regular classroom-type students into staying in school, getting their credits and going into the workplace as good workers. He had a wonderful rapport with the kids."
The last year he taught, Mr. Meeker would spend his mornings at school and his afternoons taking chemotherapy treatments, said his wife of 10 years, Kathleen R. Meeker.
"It was hard, but he was determined," Mrs. Meeker said.
Mr. Meeker was active in the community, serving as a Green Township trustee for 18 years and a life squad volunteer for 10 years.
"He liked to get out there and do things," Mrs. Meeker said. "If he could have, he'd eventually have run for (Brown) county commissioner."
Mr. Meeker also is survived by two sons, Brad and J.C. Meeker; two stepchildren, Melanie and Josh Allton; parents, Edward and Hazel Meeker; and sister, Judy Meeker, all of Mount Orab.

Dr. Nelson Boyd Sr., family doctor
Dr. Nelson E. Boyd Sr. was a family practitioner in every sense of the word.
"He delivered babies and set broken bones. He made house calls, and sometimes went out when the snow was knee deep," said Dr. Boyd's wife, Virginia Kruse Hampton Boyd.
Dr. Boyd, 91, of Independence, Ky., died Saturday at his home.
He had a family medical practice in Independence for 51 years and remarked upon retiring in November 1989 that his retirement day was the saddest day of his life.
"He loved being a doctor. That was his life," said Mrs. Boyd.
Dr. Boyd joined the Army Air Corps during World War II and served in China, Burma and India.
After the war, Dr. Boyd opened an office in a house where he lived, and then next door to his residence on McMilian Drive.
Other survivors are sons, Nelson E. Boyd Jr. and Archie Boyd, both of Independence; daughters, Dorothy Dixon of Crescent Springs, Mary Styles of Paducah and Melissa Turner of Independence; a stepson, Alan Charles Hampton of Independence; sisters, Mary E. Boyd and Rebecca Bugg, both of Paducah, Ky., and Ruth Ann Thomas of Memphis, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorial Mass for Doug Doench
A Mass will be said for Doug Doench, a longtime news and morning radio news anchor of WUBE-FM and WMLX-AM, on Wednesday at St. Ann Church in Groesbeck.
Mr. Doench, 57, died Sunday after being struck by a car while walking on a sidewalk near his home in Colerain Township. The accident occurred on West Galbraith Road at about 9 a.m.
The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the accident and has charged Elizabeth H. Pease, 22, of North College Hill, with aggravated vehicular homicide. Police are checking to see if Ms. Pease was driving drunk or on drugs at the time of the accident.
Police said Ms. Pease was driving west on West Galbraith Road when she lost control of her car, veered off the right side of the road, continued up on the sidewalk and struck Doench.
Doench had worked for many local radio stations, including WLW, WKRC and WSAI. He taught news writing at Xavier University and was currently on medical leave from his teaching job at Hughes Center, a public high school in Clifton.
Survivors are his wife, Janice; five sons, Louis, Jonathan and William, all of Clifton, Anthony of Northside and Andrew of Groesbeck; three daughters, Jessica Doench of Reading, Cordia Doench of Northside, and Kathleen Doench of Groesbeck; three sisters, Rita Southerland of Green Township, Elizabeth Lilley of Morrow, Ohio, and Dolores Schwab of Delhi Township; two brothers, Gregory Doench of Cresskill, N.J., and Joseph Doench of Finneytown; his mother, Rose Elizabeth Doench of Covedale; two grandchildren.
