Lizabeth Lee Wilkins of Ky., 'born to be a teacher'
When Lizabeth Lee Wilkins was a child she loved to play school - and she was always the teacher.
"If ever there was anybody born to be a teacher, she was," said her mother, Lee Wilkins of Bowling Green, Ky.
"From the time she was a little girl and could walk around, she and her daddy would put a blackboard in the garage and set up chairs.
"She would put all her teddy bears in the seats and her two younger sisters - if she could hog-tie them to the chairs."
After Miss Wilkins grew up, she spent 26 years in front of blackboards in Boone County classrooms, where the chairs were filled with third-graders.
Miss Wilkins died Tuesday morning at her home in Edgewood. She was 48 years old.
Miss Wilkins was born in Memphis, Tenn., and reared in Louisville, Nashville and Dayton, Ohio.
She earned a bachelor's degree in education from Eastern Kentucky University and a master's degree in education from Northern Kentucky University.
"She was a 4.0 student all through grade school, high school and college," said her mother.
Miss Wilkins taught third-graders, first at Ockerman Elementary School in Florence, Ky., and then Stephens Elementary School in Burlington, Ky.
She retired Oct. 30.
She also was a Reds fan who loved hockey, the symphony and the theater.
Besides her mother, survivors include sisters Suzanne Addington of Gray, Tenn., and Deborah Szczapinski of Bowling Green; nephews and a niece.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the Linnemann Funeral Home in Burlington.
Visitation will begin there at 3 p.m. Friday.
Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Bowling Green.
Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014; or American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2, Florence, Ky. 41042.
