Margaret Fulford, trail-blazing botanist

Margaret Hannah Fulford, a world-renowned botanist and groundbreaking female scientist, died Sunday at the age of 95.

Dr. Fulford was perhaps best known for her work identifying and researching Hepaticae, a family of small, moss-like, moisture-loving liverworts, according to officials at the University of Cincinnati, where she taught for 47 years.

But outside her narrow field, the scientist was recognized for blazing paths for other women to engage in botany. While working toward her doctorate at Yale University in the 1930s, Dr. Fulford was not always allowed to participate in classes with men, forcing her to sit outside in the hallway.

During her career, however, Dr. Fulford earned numerous accolades from her colleagues at UC and throughout her field. She received UC's Rieveschl Award for Distinguished Research in 1983 and was the first woman elected fellow of UC's Graduate School in 1957.

She served as honorary vice president at the 1954 International Botanical Congress in Paris and as a six-time committee chair at other meetings of the congress. She was curator of Hepaticae for the American Bryological Society and associate editor of the trade journal, Bryologist.

Her personal collection of dried plants numbered more than 100,000 and now comprises UC's Margaret H. Fulford Bryophite Herbarium and Library.

"She was one of the leading people in her field and was an internationally known expert, particularly in South American liverworts," said Jerry Snider, professor of biological science at UC.

Dr. Fulford was born in Cincinnati and earned her undergraduate and master's degrees at UC during the 1920s. After retiring in 1974 as professor emeritus of botany, she continued her research for 16 years.

"She was real active and very strong-willed," said Stanley Lawwill, her brother-in-law. "The whole family admired her deeply. It wasn't just the family - it was the people at the university, too."

Survivors include a sister, Martha L. Lawwill of Falls Church, Va.; three nieces and four nephews.

The family has arranged private services through Elden A. Good Funeral Home, 2620 Erie Ave., Hyde Park.
