Lora Hosking Nast, sang with May Festival
Lora Hosking Nast, 88, formerly of Norwood, died Nov. 24 at a Portland, Maine, nursing home after a long illness.
A gifted soprano, Mrs. Nast sang for many years with the Cincinnati May Festival and with the Cincinnati Opera, both at the Zoo and at Music Hall, often as a soloist.
A native of Covington, Mrs. Nast grew up in Fort Thomas, Ky., and graduated from Highlands High School. She moved to Cincinnati and worked for Procter & Gamble in the 1930s.
She and her husband, William Nast, of Madisonville, met while both were singing in the chorus of Wagner's "Tannhauser" at Music Hall. He slipped the engagement ring on her finger as the couple walked through the cathedral scene of Wagner's "Die Meister Singer."
Mrs. Nast was often a guest soloist on occasions around Cincinnati and directed several church choirs in Cincinnati and Norwood. For 20 years, every month she and her husband entertained the residents of the Scarlet Oaks Retirement Community.
Mrs. Nast worked in the admitting department at Bethesda Hospital's maternity ward, volunteered as a reading tutor for children and was a talented seamstress. She was an active member of the former Bethlehem Methodist Church on Woodburn Avenue and of the Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church where she served in church choirs for more than 55 years.
The Nasts lived in Norwood for 35 years before moving to Ocean View in Falmouth, Maine, in 1988 to be near family. Nast preceded Mrs. Nast in death in 1992 after 56 years of marriage.
Mrs. Nast leaves a son, Thomas William Nast, of Downers Grove, Ill.; a daughter, Lora Jane Anderson, of Falmouth, Maine; 8 grandchildren; and give great-grandchildren.
Services will be Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. at Spring Grove Cemetery Chapel. The Anderson W. Mack Johnson funeral home is in charge.

Rev. Gilbert Willard, served Cheviot church
The Rev. Gilbert Lee Willard, 69, of Covington, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas, Ky. He was a retired machine operator with Miami Margarine in Cincinnati, and a retired minister with Cheviot Church of God.
A daughter, Marilyn Willard, died in 1953. A son, Lonnie Willard, died in 1972.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Mason Willard; daughters, Verna Murphy of Bromley, Ky., and Kathy Daniels of Latonia, Ky.; a son, Rev. Vernon Willard of Crab Orchard, Ky.; a brother, Arnold Willard of Frankfort, Ky.; four granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.

'Mel' McDonald, housing administrator
Melva "Mel" McDonald, a retired federal housing administrator in Cincinnati, died Sunday at age 73.
Mr. McDonald, of Florence, Ky., helped start a housing program that came to be used nationwide.
"He was a very fine, very charitable man," said his wife, Dollie. "He always wanted everybody to have an equal chance, but he believed you had to work."
After retiring as a housing administrator, Mr. McDonald worked as a federal appraiser with the Veterans Administration and the Federal Housing Authority until 1994.
Other survivors include daughters, Mary Beth Field of Fort Wright, Ky., Pamela Breithaupt of Sterling, Va., Joyce Sailing of Covington, Terri Zeiter of Arlington, Texas, Ella Field and Lisa Field, both of Florence; a son, William "Bucky" Field of Lexington; a brother, Miller McDonald of LaFollette, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

Jess Coen, steamboat industry authority
Jess L. Coen, a top authority in the steamboat industry, died Sunday on his 94th birthday.
Mr. Coen, of Clifton Heights, was president of Frisbie Engine & Machine Co., which served the river, coal mining and space industries for nearly 50 years. He was still active in the company until August.
He and his son, Reed Coen, were on the design team for the American Queen, a 544-passenger New Orleans steamboat sternwheeler with the tallest stacks ever built, which was constructed in 1995.
They also made heat shields for the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo spacecrafts and designed facilities for loading and unloading barges on the Mississippi River. They also made calliopes for the steamboats.
Coen also became a manager for the Hatfield Coal Co. and helped the company build the then- largest silos in the country here.
He and his wife, Helyn, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September.
At his request, his body is being donated to the University of Cincinnati Medical Research Department.
He is also survived by a brother, Joseph W. Coen, of Port Neches, Texas .
