Dr. William Larsen, UC medical prof

Dr. William J. Larsen could truly claim to be a "Renaissance man," equally com fortable studying the human body, building complex musical instruments or collecting the handiwork of the Hopi people.

A medical professor at the University of Cincinnati for more than 18 years, he died Frida y at 57.

"He just had all these interests and he wasn't afraid to pursue them," said Judith I. Larsen, his wife. "He had a sense that life is precious and that you have to live every moment to its fullest - and he did."

Dr. Larsen, who served on the National Board of Medical Examiners, taught embryology and anatomy to UC medical students and was co-director of a developmental biology course for graduate students.

He was working on the third edition of his embryology text, which has been published in six languages. Recently, the U.S. National Institute of Health awarded him a five-year grant to study developmental biology and related fields.

He was equally accomplished in his personal life. With his children, Britta and Eric, he started a furniture-building company that has produced more than 100 pieces. On his own, Dr. Larsen built three harpsichords and one fortepiano for his wife. He constructed the first after they were married and could hardly afford anything more; the last he built out of passion, stretching poplar planks for a harpsichord based on an 18th-century Flemish design.

An avid lover of the Southwest and the Hopi people, Dr. Larsen collected Hopi kachinas and pottery and Navajo rugs. He planned to retire to his home in Placitas, New Mexico.

He also enjoyed traveling to Europe, collecting antique maps of Denmark and fiction-writing. He recently finished a mystery novel.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Larsen leaves his his daughter, Britta Larsen; his son, Eric Larsen; brothers Kendall and Thomas Larsen; sister Katie DeGroot and dear friend Peter McCann.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Annual Larsen Lecture in Developmental Biology with checks payable to the University of Cincinnati Larsen Memorial, Department of Cell Biology, UC College of Medicine, 231 Bethesda Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45206-0521.

A memorial celebration will be held 1 p.m. Friday in the Rieveschl Auditorium at UC's Vontz Center for Molecular Studies. Dr. Larsen's ashes will be scattered at Chaco Canyon in New Mexico.

Nettie Lane, Spanish-American war widow

Nettie B. Lane, one of the last Spanish-American War widows in Kentucky, died at her Erlanger home Tuesday at age 106.

She painted, gardened, quilted, and was an active member of the Wesley Methodist Church in Ludlow for more than 75 years.

She and her husband, William Ben Lane, raised five children. He was already a veteran and 21 years her senior when they married in 1921.

"I never, ever heard her complain. She accepted whatever happened and went on," said a daughter, Lillian Ruehrwein of Geendale, Ind.

The family lived in Bromley, Ky., until they lost everything in the 1937 flood, Mrs. Ruehrwein said. Then they moved to a farm in Northern Kentucky. In 1942, tragedy struck again. Spontaneous combustion in just-harvested hay caught the barn on fire, and a day later, smoldering sparks from the barn caught the house on fire.

"When my dad came home, she looked at him and started to cry," her daughter said. "He said 'Mother, look at your five children and consider yourself lucky.' "

The family started over, moving back to Bromley, where they stayed until Mr. Lane retired from the Southern Railroad in 1948. They moved to St. Petersburg, Fla., and lived there until he died in 1957.

Mrs. Lane was never afraid to try something new. Her daughters, Anna Bell Lane of Erlanger and Virginia Smyly were doing missionary work in Costa Rica. She got a visa and joined them, taking art lessons at the university there.

She took up chair caning in her 90s and never stopped gardening. Mrs. Lane celebrated her 106th birthday on Dec. 10.

Survivors also include her daughter Nettie Barnett of Battle Creek, Mich.; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Her son, Carl, died in 1978 and daughter, Virginia Smyly, died in 1986.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m Friday at Ronald B.  Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at the Wesley Methodist Church, Ludlow. Memorials may be made to the church, 319 Oak St., Ludlow, Ky., 41016.

George Koch, helped move
paper into computer age

George William "Bill" Koch, longtime Linotype machinist for The Cincinnati Pos t and Times Star who helped move the paper into the computer age, died Thursday at his home in Hebron. He was 78.

Mr. Koch served in the Army during World War II and was with the troops who liberated the concentration camp at Dachau.

The experience intensified his compassion for people, said his wife, Margaret.

"He was always cognizant of other people's feelings and their beliefs," she said. "He was a wonderful man."

After returning from the war, he started his 37-year career at The Post, setting type on the massive Linotype machines. He became the head machinist and in the 1970s helped work on the transition to computers.

He left The Post in the early 1980s and ran an Enquirer paper route until he decided to retire in 1984.

Mr. Koch coached baseball teams with the American Legion and enjoyed golf and fishing, but his family was his first love, said his daughter, Linda Winkler of Burlington.

His sons had a rock 'n' roll band, and Mr. Koch was their biggest fan.

"We used to travel with them, and sit in the corner and listen. He was so proud of the boys," Mrs. Koch said.

"He was laid-back, and he had such a big heart," said Mrs. Winkler.

"Every child who ever came across him adored him."

Children used to come to the door, she said, and ask if he could come out and play.

The Kochs lived in Erlanger for most of their lives. They moved to Hebron to live with their daughter, Leigh Ober, a year ago, after Mr. Koch developed cancer.

Other survivors include sons, Gary Koch of Erlanger and Greg Koch of New York City; a sister, Laverne Hoppenjans of Fort Wright; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Mary Queen of Heaven Church, Er langer, with a reception afterward.

Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky., 41014.
