Aeriwentha 'Mae' Starr, gold medal sprinter
Services are 11 a.m. today at the Lincoln Heights Baptist Church for former Olympic gold medalist Aeriwentha "Mae" Starr. She died Thursday at the age of 67.
As a 16-year-old high school sprinter in 1948, she was chosen to compete in the Olympics in London. While she did not win a medal, she returned in 1952 to win the gold at Helsinki, Finland, in the 400-meter relay. Four years later, in Melbourne, Australia, she won a bronze in the same race.
"She was an early pioneer," said her husband, Eddie. "Mae had been to the Olympics when she got a scholarship to Tennessee State. They had a one-woman track team there for a while."
Mrs. Starr also helped another young sprinter - Wilma Rudolph - hit her stride among the world's great sprinters, also winning Olympic gold.
In 1976, Mrs. Starr was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame, now located in Indianapolis, and most recently was inducted into the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame in New York City.
She also was featured in an HBO documentary, "Spirit of the Games," about Olympic athletes from 1920-60.
Better known as Mae Faggs Starr, the native of Bayside, N.Y. came to Cincinnati after the 1956 games to start her teaching career at Lockland Wayne High School. She eventually became an administrator in the Princeton City Schools.
At Lockland Wayne High, she met Eddie Starr, who was studying for his teaching certificate, and they married in 1958.
She earned a master's degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1973. In 1976, she was named director of women's athletics at Princeton High School and led the girls' track and field team to the state championship in 1989.
Mrs. Starr's Olympic medals are part of a collection of about 150 medals and 25 trophies she won during nine years of sprint competition. She held the national indoor 220-yard championship for four years and the national AAU outdoor 100 and 200-meter titles for two years.
She attended Tennessee State A&I on an athletic scholarship, one of the few colleges at the time that offered such aid to women.
Wilma Rudolph was a fellow student.
"Mae tells a story about them running in some championship and, at the end, Wilma almost caught up with her but she hesitated and Mae won," Starr said. "They were great friends."
"Mae met no strangers," her husband said. "She was outgoing, open and honest."
She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1990 but recovered. She beat it again four years later, but the cancer returned last fall in her spine.
