Lenore Wingard, Olympics swimmer

Lenore Kight Wingard of College Hill was a world-class swimmer who competed in t he 1932 and 1936 Olympics and kept swimming all her life.

Mrs. Wingard died Wednesday after a long illness. She was 88.

She set world and U.S. records in freestyle events and won a gold and silver medal in the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles and a bronze at the 1936 Games. She is in the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

"She still gets requests for autographs from all over the world," said her son, Cleon J. Wingard Jr. of College Hill.

Wingard, a retired Cincinnati police officer, said he grew up appreciating his mother's accomplishments and wanting to emulate them.

"She and I competed for quite a few years in Master's competitions," he said. "She holds many of the Master's swimming records in her age group."

One of Mrs. Wingard's best-known races was one she lost by one-tenth of a second: the 400- meter freestyle in the '32 Games.

She matched world champion swimmer Helene Madison stroke for stroke until Ms. Madison won with a world-record time of 5:28.5.

Mrs. Wingard, then Lenore Kight, finished in 5:28.6, also better than the prior world record.

Because of the close finish, judges took 15 minutes to figure out who was the winner.

In a 1991 interview, Mrs. Wingard recalled that during the Games in Berlin, she needed two hours to get back to her dormitory when she had to take a subway because German soldiers wouldn't let her cross the street.

"Hitler's car was going to come down the street, and you couldn't go anywhere until he g ot where he wanted," she said. "Where we stayed, we were fenced in, always guarded by soldiers. When it was over, I was glad to get home."

Mrs. Wingard called Cincinnati home since 1935, when she eloped with Cleon Wingard Sr., a retired teacher and high school principal, who survives her.

After her Olympics accomplishments, Mrs. Wingard raised a family in College Hill and continued swimming.

She was a swimming instructor and swam three miles a week at the Gamble-Nippert YMCA in Westwood until about five years ago, her son said.

Other survivors include a daughter, Diane Lynn Peterson of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

There will be a private service for the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Neediest Kids of All, P.O. Box 631700, Cincinnati, 45263-1700.

Judge Bettman resisted 'cry of the mob'

Gilbert Bettman, one of Cincinnati's most independent-thinking and controversi al judges during his 37-year judicial career, died Saturday. The Walnut Hills resident was 82.

A Republican in a county where Republican judges usually campaign on "lock 'em up" themes, Mr. Bettman's sentences often were aimed at rehabilitation as much as punishment.

"He truly believed there was redemption among the least of us," said Mr. Bettman's wife, Marianna Brown Bettman. "He was a man who steadfastly refused to bow to public pressure or to the cry of the mob.

"I always admired his ability to do this. Only after I became a judge myself, I saw on a deeper level how much character it takes to avoid the easy, popular answer."

After graduating from Harvard, fighting in World War II, practicing law and serving as a state legislator, Mr. Bettman spent most of the last half of his life as a judge.

He was a jurist on Cincinnati Municipal Court, Hamilton County Common Pleas Court and the Ohio 1st District Court of Appeals.

After retiring at 75 in 1992, Mr. Bettman received the "Guardian of Liberty" award from the Cincinnati chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

He was cited for "consistent courage and loyalty to the Constitution, often in the face of popular sentiment and mass prejudice."

A scholar with a firm grasp of legal issues, Mr. Bettman enjoyed a reputation among fellow judges as a jurist who did his homework.

He also withstood public criticism over numerous controversial stands and decisions.

In 1967 while the Vietnam War was raging, Mr. Bettman was criticized for suggesting that anti-draft demonstrators arrested at the Federal Building should be shown leniency.

In 1985, he was criticized for reducing charges of rape to gross sexual imposition for two men who sexually molested an 8-year-old girl. He ordered the defendants to receive psychiatric help.

In 1991, he was criticized for dismissing attempted murder charges against an AIDS sufferer who had spit bloody saliva at a nurse and guards after being arrested for jaywalking.

But, Mr. Bettman also could be tough on defendants when he thought their crimes warranted it.

Mr. Bettman once said a judge's main job was "solving problems" - for both individuals and society.

"We're dealing with human beings - man's problems," he said. "We're trying to solve the problems in a way that's a service to society and the individual."

Born on April 12, 1917, Mr. Bettman was the son of Gilbert Bettman Sr., who was vice mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio attorney general and an Ohio Supreme Court justice.

Mr. Bettman attended Cincinnati Public Schools and Harvard University, where he received a bachelor's degree in 1938 and a law degree in 1942.

During World War II, he entered the U.S. Army as a private, was promoted to sergeant, and won a field commission to lieutenant. He saw combat in the Philippines and on Okinawa and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic action.

After the war, he returned to Cincinnati and practiced law. His public life began in 1953 when he began serving the first of two terms in the Ohio House of Representatives.

Mr. Bettman's judicial career started in 1956 in Cincinnati Municipal Court. He became a common pleas court judge in 1965, an Ohio 1st District Court of Appeals judge in 1977 and sat again in common pleas court from 1981 to 1992.

He was chosen presiding judge of Municipal Court in 1960 and was elected president of the Ohio Municipal Judges Association in 1964.

He also was presiding judge of Common Pleas Court in 1972, served as vice president of the Ohio Judicial Conference and was a member of the Ohio Federal-State Judicial Relations Committee.

Outside of court, Mr. Bettman was president of numerous organizations, including Cincinnati Council on World Affairs, Central Psychiatric Clinic Board, Walnut Hills High School Parents Association, Cincinnati Committee for Israel Bonds, Harvard Law School Associations of Ohio and Cincinnati, and the Cincinnati Harvard Club.
