Rev. Krusling, was Moeller principal

The Rev. Lawrence R. Krusling was a Catholic priest whose interests covered everything from history to handwriting analysis.

"I guess you could say he was like a renaissance man," said his niece, Mary Jean Maxi of Covedale. "He really loved life. He took every opportunity to learn more and do more."

Rev. Krusling died Tuesday at the age of 73 after a long battle with cancer.

Rev. Krusling had been pastor at St. Rose Church in the East End since 1992 and was a chaplain at Deaconess Hospital in Clifton. Prior to that, he was pastor of St. Peter Church in Huber Heights, Ohio, for 10 years.

For 12 years his attention - along with much of Cincinnati's - was focused on Moeller High School, where he was principal from 1970 to 1982.

Former Moeller football coach Gerry Faust, now University of Akron vice president of public affairs, drove from Akron to Cincinnati last Saturday to visit with Rev. Krusling.

"He was a great administrator, a great boss and a great friend," said Faust. "He came to Moeller during a time of turmoil over the educational system - whether to make it more progressive or keep it conventional. He was able to use the best from both and get the two sides back together. He put the school on an even keel."

Current Moeller football coach Steve Klonne said Rev. Krusling had a great personal touch.

"I always remember that he would come around and deliver your paycheck by hand each Friday," Klonne said. "By doing that, he made you feel you really were doing a good job and contributing to Moeller High School."

Rev. Krusling, a native of Cincinnati, was ordained to the priesthood in 1951, having studied at St. Gregory and Mount St. Mary's seminaries. He earned graduate degrees from the Athenaeum of Ohio and Xavier University.

He was an associate pastor at several Cincinnati parishes in the 1950s, during which he also taught at Purcell High School. In 1956, he became rector of St. Peter Claver Oratory and principal of Fenwick High School, both in Middletown.

From 1967 to 1971, he was pastor of St. Pius Church in Cumminsville.

One of Rev. Krusling's avocations was handwriting analysis, also known as graphoanalysis. He was a certified master graphoanalyst with the International Graphoanalysis Society.

Survivors include nine nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Rose Church, 2501 Eastern Ave. Visitation is at 10 a.m. at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rev. Julian O. Krusling Scholarship Fund, c/o Fenwick High School, Middletown, or the Rev. Lawrence R. Krusling Scholarship Fund, c/o Moeller High School, 9001 Montgomery Ave., Cincinnati, 45242.

Herbert A. Holinko, followed his life's passions

Herbert A. Holinko, who died Thursday at age 63, lived a life of many loves.

The Bridgeport, Conn., native converted his love for classical music and his piano talents into a scholarship to the Julliard Conservatory.

His love for the military led him to attend Virginia military Institute in 1953 where he studied for one year before transferring to Xavier University to study political science and in its Reserve Officer Training Corps program, earning a degree in 1957.

Using that degree, he was commissioned 2nd Lt. Holinko in 1957 in the U.S. Army as a field artillery officer, serving on active duty through 1958 at Fort Sill, Okla.

He enrolled at the University of Cincinnati law school before meeting another love - Betty Parker, the woman he married Oct. 15, 1960.

With his new family, Mr. Holinko began a teaching and school administration career that saw him teach social studies at McNicholas and Badin high schools and teach at Urbana and Wilmington colleges.

He also helped administer college programs for the military in Cincinnati and Dayton in Ohio and Lexington and Louisville in Kentucky, served as the public affairs colonel for the Ohio military Reserves and was seven-term president and board member of the Cincinnati chapter of the Association of the U.S. Army.

Throughout his life, Mr. Holinko remained in love with his Polish heritage, including attending Connecticut's Saint Michael Archangel Polish Ethnic Parish Grade School. He helped organize Polish activities while at Xavier, became head of the area Polish-American Community, founded and, with his wife, was co-host of the radio station program "Polish Melodies."

He received in 1995 the Republic of Poland Cavalier's Cross of the Order - similar, his family noted, to the U.S. Medal of Honor - for lifetime service for Polish causes and participation.

The Anderson Township resident was the stepfather of six, grandfather of five and great-grandfather of nine.
