Robert E. Bass, retired USDA meat inspector

Thomas A. Meyer, cared about students

Thomas A. Meyer, an assistant principal at St. Xavier High School and an enthusiastic supporter of St. X sports teams, particularly baseball, died Sunday shortly after the St. Xavier baseball team won the Division I state championship.

Meyer, 54, taught at St. Xavier for 30 years, and friends said he rarely missed a baseball game. He died at the Sunrise Assisted Living community in Finneytown after a long battle with cancer.

"I think the most important thing to remember about Tom Meyer is that he was an excellent teacher and he cared deeply about the students," said St. Xavier principal David Mueller. "He held the position as assistant principal of discipline for more than 25 years, which is almost unheard of in education.

"The reason he had such a long and successful tenure is that he always considered his role as school disciplinarian as bringing out the best in students, and calling on them to be their best. Almost 30 years of St. X graduates regard him as one of their biggest role models."

A native of Cincinnati, Meyer graduated from St. Xavier in 1963 and earned a bachelor's and a master's degree in English from Xavier University. He joined the St. X staff in 1969 as an English teacher, and continued to teach until illness overtook him last year.

He was a friend and admired teacher of the many students who passed through his classes, and when his death was announced at Sunday's rally celebrating the baseball team's state title there was a standing ovation in honor of his life.

He leaves his mother, Mary Alice Meyer, of Springfield Township, and two sisters, Donna Moore, of Colerain Township and Mary Jo Bush, of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at St. Xavier, Springfield Township. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Xavier. The Fredericks Funeral Home, Groesbeck, is in charge.
