DONALD LEE SNIDER, 74, of Mount Orab, died Monday. He was a tool grinder for Cincinnati Gilbert Machine Tool. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Thompson-Stevens Funeral Home, Mount Orab. Visitation: 6-8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. Memorials: Mount Orab Church of Christ.

Rev. Troy Davidson, Linwood,
East End pastor for 50 years

The Rev. Troy Davidson was a pastor not only to the people in his church but to many in the communities of Linwood and the East End for 50 years.

Rev. Davidson died in his home on Thursday from congestive heart failure. He was 77.

He pastored Oakley Square Church of God, formerly Eastern Avenue Church of God, for 34 years, retiring in 1988. He also was active in serving the Eastern Avenue community through food distribution on Thanksgiving, and clothing and toy distribution on Christmas.

"He founded the church on Eastern Avenue so he could help the people in those communities," said his daughter, Joyce Geier of Cincinnati. "He spent his entire life giving of himself and all his resources to others."

In addition to his church work, Rev. Davidson drove the church bus for students of Highland and St. Rose elementary schools when they went on field trips. He also was active in starting softball teams and leagues for neighborhood children.

Rev. Davidson was a World War II veteran who saw combat in Italy. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He studied at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn., and received his pastoral license from the Church of God (Cleveland, Tenn.) in 1953.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Helen; six daughters, Cheryl Broyles of Alpharetta, Ga., and Mrs. Geier, Janet Davidson, Kathy Hartmann, Lisa Johns, and Becky Williams, all of Cincinnati; a son, Dennis Davidson of Cincinnati; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five brothers, Elbert Davidson of Mount Healthy, Willie Ray Davidson of Amelia, George Gilbert of Oxford, David Cornett of Hamilton, and Billie Dezarn of London, Ky.; six sisters, Geneva Webb of Mount Healthy, Eula Barrons and Martha Curro, both of Lakeside, Calif., and Jewel Davidson, Brenda Robertson, and Laura Smith, all of Hamilton; and his mother, Maggie Dezarn of Oxford.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Tufts Schildmeyer Funeral Home, 1668 St. Rt. 28, Goshen, Ohio. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Milford Church of God, 1487 St. Rt. 131. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oakley Square Church of God Building Fund, 8290 Batavia Pike, Cincinnati 45244.

MARY ROSE SCOTT, 81, of Clifton, died Friday. She was a homemaker. Services: noon Wednesday at Southern Baptist Church, 3556 Reading Road. Visitation: 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Thompson, Hall and Jordan Funeral Home is in charge.

Thomas Dearing, sales manager

Thomas Dearing, the general sales manager at Toyota Towne in Florence, Ky., died Friday in an accident when he and his family were returning from a vacation in Florida.

Authorities said the wreck occurred near Richmond, Ky., on Interstate 75 when another car blew a tire and hit Mr. Dearing's vehicle, causing his car to roll and careen off the highway.

Mr. Dearing, 46, of Dry Ridge, Ky., was dead at the scene. His wife Linda, a daughter and another girl traveling in the car, were taken to University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. All were released after treatment.

"He was our rock," said his mother, Edwina Turner Adams of Crittenden, Ky. "He watched over them all."

Mr. Dearing was born in Maysville, Ky., but his mother said the family moved to Covington before he started school. He attended Bishop Brossart High School in Alexandria and Newport Catholic High School. He worked for Toyota Towne for 25 years.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Crittenden. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to church or charity of choice.

Charlie Watkins, 75, cab driver

Charlie Watkins met many eccentric and pleasant customers as a cab driver in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

"He just never knew" who would climb into his cab, said his daughter, Marline Ward. "Occasionally he would even tell us that he picked up a celebrity. He always had lots of stories."

Mr. Watkins, 75, of Covington, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, Ky. He retired from cab driving in the early '70s because of health reasons.

"He was a good father and provider," Mrs. Ward said.

Mr. Watkins met his wife of 55 years, Neola, in Hazard, Ky., where he worked in the coal mines. When they relocated to the area, both took jobs at Yellow Cab in Newport and Covington, where Mrs. Watkins worked as a dispatcher.

Mr. Watkins also worked for cab services in Cincinnati.

Other survivors include sons, John Watkins of Alexandria and Charles Watkins of  Taylor Mill; daughters, Hurshlene Pollitt of Augusta, Ky., Hendalee Doane of Covington, Elizabeth Powers of Park Hills, Darlane Ward of Richmond, Marie Ward of Independence and Angela Watters of Latonia; 37 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Visitation for officer tonight

Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. today for Cincinnati Police Officer William Estes, who was killed Sunday when his motorcycle crashed into a utility pole.

Fraternal Order of Police services will be at 7:30 p.m. at the John J. Radel Funeral Co., 650 Neeb Road, Delhi Township.

Services are set for 11 a.m. Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

The 32-year-old Cleves man, a six-year veteran of the police division, will be buried at Highland Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, Ky.

Survivors include his father, James "Bill" Estes, of Cadiz, Ky.; his mother, Marlene Estes, Erlanger, Ky.; his sister, Jennifer Black, of Florence, Ky.; and his grandmother, Elizabeth Collinsworth, of Saylersville, Ky.

'Monte' Wilhelm wrote Post column

Emanuel "Monte" Wilhelm, a columnist for The Cincinnati Post for almost 40 years, has died. He was 85.

Mr. Wilhelm, of Bridgetown, was editor and wrote a weekly column for the auto section and sold national advertising from 1940 to 1979. He began his career selling advertising for his hometown paper, the Toledo News Bee, and moved to the Columbus Citizen before working for The Post.

He died May 24 after a fall that broke his hip.

A devoted golfer, Wilhelm had a four handicap while playing on public courses and leagues.

"I always said if I died first and my funeral was on a golf day, he'd miss the funeral," joked Rosemary Wilhelm, his wife of 54 years.

During World War II, he was a first sergeant stationed outside London at a depot holding German prisoners.

"He was a very warm, friendly, loving person," Mrs. Wilhelm said. "I think everybody liked Monte."

Mr. Wilhelm also was a longtime member of the Kiwanis and a Post and Times-Star alumni group.

He also is survived by his son, Robert E. of Crocker, Mo.; his daughter, Elizabeth Webb of Bridgetown; two brothers, Anthony of South Bend, Ind., and Aloysius of Toledo; three sisters, Alice Jacob of Palatka, Fla., Lillian Huebach of Newark, Ohio, and Rose Gorr of Toledo; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mass was May 27. Memorials: Parkinson Wellness Center, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, P.O. Box 670525, 23 Bethesda Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.
