John Gislason, recreation leader
John Gislason, a leader in Terrace Park recreation activities, died Tuesday of a heart attack. He was 64.
Mr. Gislason worked 37 years for the Procter & Gamble Co., retiring five years ago as district manager for food sales in Cincinnati.
He was on the Terrace Park Recreation Commission and was a baseball coach. He also helped lead fund-raising efforts in the late 1970s that resulted in Drackett Field, 10 acres devoted to baseball and soccer fields.
"We didn't have a place for our children to play organized sports," said Sue Porter, who served with Mr. Gislason on the recreation commission. "Now we have this beautiful field because he led the effort to purchase the property and convert it into a beautiful place for our children.
"He was a lightning rod for activity in our community at a real important time, a leader with strength and charisma," she said.
Mr. Gislason also was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Terrace Park and a board member of Terrace Park Country Club.
Survivors include his wife, Janice; sons, Bill Gislason of Terrace Park, Rob Gislason of Orlando, Fla., and Dave Gislason of Philadelphia; daughters, Jill Gislason and Amy Timmers, both of Terrace Park; and his mother, Madelyn Mitchell of Clearwater, Fla.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Terrace Park. No visitation is planned. Craver-Riggs Funeral Home in Milford is handling arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the capital campaign at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 100 Miami Ave., Terrace Park 45174.

Donald Nusbaum, '50s NASCAR driver
Donald Joseph Nusbaum was a pioneering NASCAR driver who looked forward to the opening this weekend of the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta.
But Mr. Nusbaum, 76, of Union, Ky., died at 4:34 p.m. Tuesday.
He was a retired vice president and general manager of Bennett Ford in Cincinnati and a race car driver with NASCAR in the 1950s.
"He was quiet, but he liked to talk about his races," said his wife of 56 years, Marilyn Nusbaum. "And he was a good father. His kids were his life."
He also was an Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Nusbaum was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., and spent most of the last 33 years living in Northern Kentucky.
He raced all over the Midwest and won in Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Florence.
Once he was trapped in a burning race car, his wife said.
"He told God he wouldn't race again if he let him live," Ms. Nusbaum said. "Well, he did race again, under an assumed name."
Mr. Nusbaum taught his children about cars and several make their living from the automotive industry, Mrs. Nusbaum said.
Other survivors include sons, David Nusbaum of Independence, Ky., Jeff Nusbaum and John Nusbaum, both of Daytona Beach, Fla.; daughters, Cynthia Anderson of Cincinnati and Mitzi Warren of Daytona Beach; brothers, Robert, James, Kenneth and Steven Nusbaum, all of Fort Wayne, Ind.; a sister, Mary Ellen Sieling of California; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

William James, regional bishop
Bishop William M. James started out in the ministry as a "boy preacher." He heard the call of God at 11 and began preaching soon thereafter.
But for the bulk of his ministry, he was pastor of two Ohio congregations, in Toledo and in Cincinnati.
Bishop James died Sunday after a brief illness. He was 71.
He was pastor of James Temple Church of God in Christ, 1116 Lincoln Ave., Walnut Hills, for 45 years. He pastored St. James Holiness Church in Toledo for 48 years.
He lived in Toledo and commuted every other Sunday to Cincinnati.
Bishop James was the first and only Ohio appointee to the General Board of the Church of God in Christ, based in Memphis. He was bishop of the Ohio North District, a jurisdiction covering 128 churches.
"Many well-known and successful ministers have sat under his tutelage and bear witness to the anointing on his life," said James Temple parishioner Melody Pruitt. "He built homes and sponsored missionaries overseas, and aided students with their educational pursuits."
Bishop James also founded Latter Rain Ministries, which hosts yearly spiritual conferences for men, women and young people.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Annette; and five sons, Jonathan, Dellson, Joel, Adam and Williams James Jr.
Services are set for noon Monday at James Temple Church of God in Christ, 1116 Lincoln Ave.

Sister Vincentia Rettig, devoted to nursing
Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Vincentia Rettig, 88, of Delhi Township, died Wednesday.
She was a former assistant director of nursing at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati.
She was a member of the American Nurses Association, the National League for Nursing, Catholic Nurses Association, the National Association for Practical Nurse Education and the Western Interstate Council on Higher Education in Nursing.
Sister Rettig was a past president of the Colorado State Board of Nurse Examiners and the Nursing Education section of the Ohio College Association.
She was a former director of nursing with Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, St. Mary Corwin Hospital in Pueblo, Colo., and Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo.
She also was a former assistant administrator of nursing with Wayne State University in Detroit.
In 1986, the College of Mount St. Joseph created the Sister Vincentia Award to honor achievement in nursing.
Survivors: brothers, Vincent Rettig of Fort Mitchell, Ky., and George Rettig of Fort Wright, Ky.; a sister, Genevieve Boehm of St. Bernard; nieces and nephews.
