R. Flottemesch, businessman

Robert A. Flottemesch, second generation president of a family custom cabinet business, died Sunday evening. He was 68.

Mr. Flottemesch's father, Anthony, a German immigrant, started A. Flottemesch & Sons Inc., now located in Madeira, in 1945. But it was Robert Flottemesch who dealt most often with the public.

"He liked getting out and talking to the customers," said Mr. Flottemesch's son, Jim. "Dad was very good at working with people."

Mr. Flottemesch, of Madeira, was a true artisan and continued to worked on wood cabinets until he retired two years ago. He even used spare wood to make cutting boards as a surprise for friends.

He also organized a campaign among local businesses to raise money to buy cameras for the Madeira Police cruisers.

And he enjoyed camping and had a good eye with a camera.

"We're definitely going to miss that," Jim Flottemesch said. "He did fill up a lot of albums here."

Mr. Flottemesch also is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Catherine; another son, Robert of Fort Myers, Fla.; a daughter, Catherine Stiens of Montgomery; his sister, Virginia Leesemann of Montgomery; and 12 grandchildren.

Mass: 1:30 p.m., Thursday, St. Gertrude Church, 7630 Shawnee Run Road, Madeira. Visitation: 12:30 p.m. at the church.

Memorials: The American Heart Association or Spiritual Bouquets. Gilligan Funeral Home in charge.

Metal worker Elmer Tanner,
enjoyed watching horse racing

Elmer Edward Tanner, a sheet-metal worker with Tanner Erection Co. in Cincinnati, died Tuesday.

Mr. Tanner, 79, of Florence, Ky., also was a member of Ohio Valley Harness Racing Association, Boone-Union Masonic Lodge No. 304 F&AM and Sheet Metal Workers Union Local No. 24, Cincinnati.

He was a member of Union Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Tanner; sons, Phil Tanner of Erlanger, Ky., and Rick Tanner of Florence; a stepson, Milton Doan of Hardinsburg, Ind.; stepdaughters, Wanda Lamping of Bradenton, Fla., Mary Myers of Hardinsburg and Sharon Emerson of Walton, Ky.; a brother, Buddy Tanner of Florence; a sister, Bernice Meeker of Fort Wright, Ky.; 18 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.

Robert Hehman, UC biology prof

Robert Hehman, a biologist and aviation buff who overcame tremendous odds to carve out a successful life, died today at Christ Hospital. He was 58.

A biology professor at the University of Cincinnati for 25 years before his retirement, Mr. Hehman, while a Xavier University student in 1961, broke his neck in a diving accident. He was paralyzed from the shoulders down and spent the rest of his life in a wheel chair.

But this didn't stop him, said his brother, Norb Hehman. He went on to get his bachelor's degree in biology from Xavier and a master's degree from UC.

"His career goal was to be a physician, but due to his injury and some of the resultant physical limitations, he turned to biology," Norb Hehman said. "And he ended up teaching innumerable local physicians and nurses and medical people over the years."

He also wrote several textbooks on biology. In 1990, Mr. Hehman received the Dolly Cohen Award, which is given to the top professor at UC as voted by the students and faculty.

"He had an indomitable spirit," his brother said. "He was an incredible inspiration to anybody who had any contact with him. He always gave more than he took."

Mr. Hehman was a lifelong resident of Fort Thomas, Ky. He was an enthusiastic XU baseball fan and rarely missed their games. He was fascinated by airplanes and over the years became an authority on them.

Other survivors: a brother, Dr. Kenneth Hehman of Cincinnati; a sister, Joan Janszen of Highland Heights, Ky., and his lifelong friend, Gayle Eggleston of Lakeside Park.

Mass: 6 p.m. Sunday at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas. There is no visitation. Memorials: Robert Hehman Scholarship Fund at St. Xavier High School, Cincinnati. The Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is in charge.

Robert Hehman, 58, UC biology professor
