Orville Brown, Homearama founder
Orville Brown, who started Homearama and built the Home Builders Association of Cincinnati into one of the largest such groups in the United States, died at his home in Loveland on Tuesday. He was 74.
When Mr. Brown became executive director in 1957, the home builders group had only about 50 members and was nearly broke, said Elda Marshall, who succeeded him as executive director in 1989. Mr. Brown steadily built membership and oversaw construction of its headquarters. It now has about 1,300 members.
"The Home Builders Association would not be what it is today without Orville Brown," said Robert Lucke, past president of the group and president of Robert Lucke Homes in Symmes Township.
"He was a true leader. He knew how to guide people and bring out the best in them," said Ms. Marshall. "He gave great advice. It seemed like he was never wrong."
One of Mr. Brown's most lasting achievements was Homearama, a home showcase at a single site that he dreamed up and organized in 1962. The Cincinnati association copyrighted the name and Homearamas are now held across the nation. He later started Condorama and Builders Expo.
Mr. Brown's vision and strength of character enabled him to be a "tremendous provider of direction and knowledge on me and many others," said Carey Fitzpatrick, who was president of the Cincinnati association in 1985 and is president of JCB Properties in Montgomery.
