David N. Baird

RICHWOOD -- David N. Baird, age 55, of rural Richwood, died unexpectedly early Saturday morning, Dec. 20, 2003, at his home.

He was born May 16, 1948, in Zanesville, to the late John and Helen (Zimmerman) Baird.

Surviving are three children, Natalie Baird of Boston, Mass., Angela (Marc) Counts of Raymond and Lucas Baird of Columbus; his best friend and mother of their children, Sheryl Baird of Marysville; two sisters, Cynthia (Tom) Lewis of West Liberty and Barbara (Harley) Hanna of Zanesville.

Dave was a hard-working farmer, a dedicated and active member of the Richwood First Baptist Church, where through the years has held many leadership positions, member of the  Taylor Township Zoning committee, Ohio Sheep Improvement Association, attained the American Farmer Degree, member for 15 years of the Union County Fair Board, former member of the Marysville Young Farmers.

In the last couple of years, he enjoyed taking motorcycle rides and visiting family and friends. Dave always had an open door policy at his home, being supportive of neighbors, friends and family, you always knew where you stood with Dave, his direct, but fair approach, was felt by many people.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at 11 a.m., at the Richwood First Baptist Church. Friends may call Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Stofcheck Funeral Home in Richwood. Ministers will be the Revs. Alan Perkins and Scot Gorsuch. Burial will be in the Ford Reed Cemetery,  Taylor Township, near his farm.

Pallbearers will be John, David and Josh Lewis, Caleb Hanna, Ben, Brandon, Mike and Bruce Beery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Marysville FFA Alumni, and/or the First Baptist Church, both in memory of David Baird.

Martha B. Comer

MARION -- Martha B. Comer, 92, 940 Bermuda Drive, Marion, passed away at 2:11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, at Marion General Hospital.

Born June 19, 1911, in Seneca County, she was the daughter of the late James and Nellie (Wingart) Schumaker.

On June 24, 1934, in Shelby, she married Melvin "Doc" Comer; he preceded her in death June 26, 1989.

A graduate of Clyde High School, she retired from Hopewell School system. She was a member of Bascom United Methodist Church.

She is survived by five children, Tom (Marilyn) Ottesen, Palm Bay, Fla., Mrs. Ken (Sue) Durtsche, Marion, Steve (Sundra) Comer, Muscutha, Ill., Doyle (Markie) Comer, Fostoria, Dave (Vicky) Comer, Tiffin; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Audrey Moore, Jensen Beach, Fla. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Comer, a brother, Clark Schumaker and a sister, Evelyn Walters.

The funeral is 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at the Turner-Engle Funeral Home, Tiffin. Burial is in Sand Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Barbara Winterbower

MARION -- Funeral arrangements are pending with the Boyd Funeral Home for Barbara Winterbower, 62, of Marion. She died Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at Marion General Hospital.

Lucille M. Croft Beach

MOUNT GILEAD -- Lucille M. Croft Beach, 82, of Mount Gilead, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, in Morrow County Hospital.

Funeral services will be held in the Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Gilead on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at 2 p.m. Friends may call one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in the Oakview Cemetery in Royal Oak, Michigan.

William H. 'Babe' Norris

RICHWOOD -- Funeral arrangements are pending with the Stofcheck Funeral Home in Richwood for William H. "Babe" Norris, age 88, of Richwood. He died Monday evening, Dec. 22, 2003, at Marion General Hospital.

Velma McBride Messmer

UPPER SANDUSKY -- Velma McBride Messmer, 89, South Eighth Street, Upper Sandusky, passed away at 10:28 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at Marion General Hospital.

Born May 27, 1914, in Davy, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Fred and Kitty (Eden) Stiltner.

She first married Howard Neate in 1932 and he died in 1935. On April 6, 1940, she married Paul McBride and he died Jan. 29, 1969. She married Raymond Messmer on Sept. 29, 1990, and he died Aug. 14, 1997.

A 1930 graduate of Man High School, Man, W.Va., she was also a 1931 graduate of Marshall University. She was a homemaker and worked as an order clerk for Marion Power Shovel in Marion for more than 25 years. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Upper Sandusky, Upper Sandusky Lionesses, Lydia Chapter 83 OES, Marion where she was a 50 year member, member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem 15 Marion, Eagles Auxiliary 2184 and Ladies of the Moose 1093, both of Upper Sandusky. She enjoyed gardening, knitting and was an avid reader.

She is survived by three granddaughters, Mrs. John (Charlotte) Stoneburner of Harpster, Mrs. Don (Nancy Kay) Collins of Harpster, Mrs. Mark (Gisele) Rieser of Upper Sandusky; a son-in-law, Eugene Plott of Harpster; five great-grandchildren, Chad Stoneburner of Upper Sandusky, Clayton Collins of Hanover, Pa., Mrs. Karl (Laura) Wines of Upper Sandusky, Wayne Rieser of Upper Sandusky and Alaina Rieser of Upper Sandusky; three great-great-grandchildren, Justin and Addison Stoneburner, and Quinten Collins. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Plott, four brothers, Lewis, Frank, Clyde and Marshall, three sisters, Dorothy Starcher, Edith McClean and Margaret Trent.

Private family services will be held at a later date. Calling hours will not be observed. Arrangements by Lucas Funeral Home.

Howard Lee

EDISON -- Howard Lee, age 84, of Township Road 130, Edison, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at Woodside Care Center. Arrangements are pending at Gompf Funeral Home in Cardington.

Roberta J. Clarke

MARION -- Roberta J. Clarke (O'Connor) passed away at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at Community Health Care Center with her family at her side.

Her loving parents, Lucille, Francis and Fran, her very special older brother, preceded Roberta in death.

She is survived by Harry, her devoted husband of more than 49 years; seven children, Mary Kay Davis, Ellen Marie Turner, Joey Clarke, Raymond Clarke and wife Jane, Lucille Marie Lehner and husband Steve, Annie Marie Clarke, Patrick Clarke and wife Jessica; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; her very close and dear twin brother, Bob O'Connor and wife Pat of Dayton; her sisters-in-law, Eileen, Rosemary, Florence and Loretta; a very, very special cousin Ellen Andriatch of Buffalo, N.Y.; loving Costello's cousins of Cleveland; special childhood and lifelong girlfriends Denise Mraz, Mary Moyer and Dot Norman, all of Cleveland.

Roberta was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, graduating from St. Stephens High School. She moved to Marion in 1972. Her nickname was "Bobbie." She was dedicated to the blessed Virgin Mary and prayed the most holy rosary many times daily.

In lieu of flowers, please support hospice and the Marion County Board of Developmental Disabilities (MARCA) both of Marion.

Friends may call 9-10 a.m. Saturday at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church, 251 N. Main St. with the Rev. Father Rod Damico officiating. Burial is in St. Mary's Cemetery.
