D.J. Lancaster, home-school advocate

D.J. Lancaster spent the majority of her life supporting home-schooling at a time when it was frowned upon by officials. She wrote many essays and books on the benefits of home-schooling, writings that were used at teaching symposiums as guides for other teachers, said her husband of 24 years, Tim Lancaster.

"She was very brilliant," he said.

Mrs. Lancaster, 53, of Kenton Vale, Ky., died Wednesday at her home of pancreatic cancer.

She taught all three of their children at home. They all are attending Northern Kentucky University.

Her teaching abilities attracted the attention of former first lady Barbara Bush, who once made derogatory comments about home-schooling. Mrs. Bush sent Mrs. Lancaster's children handwritten letters.

"She wrote and said she was glad they were getting a good education and that she would rethink her position," Lancaster said.

Mrs. Lancaster also did oil paintings and was a member of the Attic Gallery in Newport.

Other survivors include her sons, Eli Lancaster and Zach Lancaster, both of Kenton Vale; a daughter, Nakita Lancaster of Kenton Vale; her mother, Helen Kiel of Stevensville, Mich.; and brothers, Donald Kiel of Bridgman, Mich., and Henry Kiel of Fort Myers Beach, Fla.

William Jones, Army pioneer, columnist, teacher, jazz expert
William Lawless  Jones was a pioneering black officer in the U.S. Army, a newspaper columnist, a teacher and an expert on jazz music.

"He was a trailblazer in a lot of ways," said Mr. Jones' son, Dr. Paul  Jones of Monroe, La. "He loved life and lived life to the fullest."

Mr. Jones, 85, of Paddock Hills, died Sunday at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Hospital in Dayton.

He joined the Army in 1941 and retired in 1966 as a lieutenant colonel. In 1942, he broke a color barrier by becoming the first black officer in the Army's armored branch.

Mr.  Jones wrote a column, "The Old Professor Wonders," in the Cincinnati Herald and also wrote "Diggin' That Joyous Jazz" columns in Njema Magazine, formerly NIP Magazine. He also wrote the album liner notes for J Curve's two-volume "Jazz in Cincinnati" compact disc.

"He was always interested in jazz," said Mr. Jones' wife of 56 years, Helen. "People called from all over to ask him questions about jazz.

"He had been collecting jazz records since high school and had the largest collection of jazz records anywhere in the world."

A few years ago, Mr.  Jones donated that collection to the Afro-American History Museum in Wilberforce, Ohio.

Mr.  Jones graduated from Withrow High School in 1932 and from Fisk University. He earned a master's degree from the University of Michigan and a master's degree in education from the University of Cincinnati.

While at UC, Mr.  Jones became a member of an African-American socio-cultural group called Quadres, formed by Donald Spencer. Mr.  Jones wrote plays for the group to perform and Mr. Spencer wrote music for the productions. In recent years, they performed some of their productions at the Cincinnati Art Museum and other locations.

In the Army, Mr.  Jones served in the South Pacific during World War II. He also served in the Korean War as an intelligence officer and was awarded the Bronze Star.

After retiring from the Army, Mr.  Jones taught underprivileged youngsters in New Jersey's Job Corps program. He returned to Cincinnati and recruited black youth for college under a program headed by Cincinnati's first black mayor, Theodore Berry. He also taught sociology at UC.

Eugene M. Schaengold, who owned a "5 cent to $1 Store" for 40 years, died Sunday at Mercy Hospital Anderson, in Cincinnati. He was 72.

Mr. Schaengold grew up working in his father's variety store in Cincinnati's West End. "He was buying hardware for his dad's store at age 10," said his wife, Patricia. "He was always a businessman."

Mr. Schaengold bought the variety store on Sixth Street in Dayton, Ky., in 1950, and it became a gathering place for the neighborhood.

"Everybody in town knew him," said his son-in-law, Joe Vogt of Anderson Township.

"It was a variety store and it had women's clothing and a craft shop all in the same store," Mrs. Schaengold said. "Everybody came to the dime store."

The Schaengolds lived in Cincinnati until the 1980s, when they moved to Dayton, Ky., and Mr. Schaengold was elected to the Dayton City Council. They sold the store in 1990 and retired, but not for long.

"He wasn't one to sit," his wife said. "When you're used to people, you want to be around people."

He took a job with Wal-mart in Eastgate and spent a couple days a week as cashier. "They wanted to give him a management position, but he said he'd done that," she said.

"For instance, let's say that dad would have a golf outing scheduled with the board and a meeting with the bank that afternoon, and then I'd call and say, 'Hey Dad, I have this problem at home,' " said his son, Dr. James White, a Cincinnati oral surgeon who lives in Indian Hill.

"He'd be right there. First came his wife and kids and his life."

Mr. White, of Fort Thomas, Ky., died Friday at Christ Hospital at age 68.
