Dianne Barrie, supported art center's fight
Dianne Barrie, the ex-wife of former Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center Director Dennis Barrie, has died of complications from cancer. She was 51.
Mrs. Barrie died Sunday at a nursing home near Cleveland.
She was a staunch supporter of her husband during his trial for pandering obscenity in connection with the Robert Mapplethorpe exhibit at the CAC here in 1990.
In an interview with The Post, Mrs. Barrie said one of the worst days of her life was the day her husband was indicted. "It was a horrible day, that anything like that could occur in this country was horrific," she said.
She said that one of her happiest days was the day a jury acquitted Barrie of all charges.
Nevertheless, the trial took its toll on the marriage, and the Barries separated and later divorced.
Mrs. Barrie was portrayed by actress Diane Scarwid in the recent Showtime movie "Dirty Pictures," a film about the Mapplethorpe art exhibit and the obscenity trial.
A native of Indianapolis, Mrs. Barrie moved to Cleveland from Cincinnati two years ago because her sons wanted to attend college there.
A woman with an artistic bent herself, Mrs. Barrie started a fashion cooperative, Signature Corps, while in Cincinnati to give designers a venue to exhibit and sell clothing and jewelry.
